Jonathan Daviss and Madelyn Cline’s first solo scene together as Pope and Sarah came in the final episode of Outer Banks season 4, part 1: a crypt sequence that sent the characters through cramped, sewer-like tunnels beneath a Charleston church in search of a clue to Blackbeard’s treasure. Daviss called filming it “so fun,” while Cline said the confined space and rats were not exactly her preferred setting.
The crypt scene brought Pope and Sarah together
In a PEOPLE interview published October 12, 2024, Daviss and Cline described the sequence as their first scene alone together. Their characters, Pope and Sarah Cameron, are trapped in a crypt beneath a Charleston church as they pursue a clue connected to Blackbeard’s treasure. The setting included tunnels the interview likened to sewers, as well as rats.
Daviss said he and Cline had noticed that, despite being close friends off camera, they had never had a scene focused only on the two of them. The sequence gave them a chance to play directly off one another without the rest of the group around them.
Why Daviss found filming it easy
“It was fun,” Daviss told PEOPLE. He said their real-life friendship made the scene comfortable: “It was so fun being with Maddie on it, being able to show that we have a lot of chemistry just as friends and playing off of each other was really easy and really fun, cause we’ve been working together for a long time.”

The scene prompted questions about Pope and Sarah
Working together made Daviss and Cline reflect on how little Pope and Sarah had interacted one-on-one in the series. Daviss said they discussed what the characters’ relationship might be and how their dynamic could be brought into the show. The interview reports that conversation; it does not establish a definitive label for Pope and Sarah’s relationship.

Cline’s less-than-ideal filming conditions
Cline called the scene a “really wonderful combination” for her, but clarified that its physical demands were outside her comfort zone: “I don’t like confined spaces. I’m not someone who seeks out swimming — and I definitely don’t seek out rats.” Her comment captures the contrast between the fun Daviss described in working with a friend and the unpleasant elements built into the crypt sequence.
