After the September 10, 2024, presidential debate, Jon Stewart reacted to Donald Trump’s claim about pets in Springfield, Ohio, with a blunt question: “What the (BLEEP) just happened?” CNN’s transcript captures the moment as part of Stewart’s immediate response to Trump’s abrupt detour during an answer about immigration.

What did Jon Stewart say?

Stewart went live after the debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. He joked that Harris had attacked Trump’s “most cherished family member”—his rally crowds—and described the familiar pattern of candidates not answering questions. When Trump veered from a question about an immigration bill into claims about Springfield, Stewart responded: “What the (BLEEP) just happened?” CNN’s September 11 transcript records the reaction. It supports describing the line as an immediate, comedic expression of incredulity; it does not establish a fuller explanation of Stewart’s intent or private thoughts.

What prompted the reaction?

During the debate, Trump was asked about the bipartisan immigration bill. He responded to Harris’s comment about his rally audiences, then made claims about pets in Springfield. He said, “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs,” and added, “they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

Moderator David Muir said ABC News had contacted Springfield’s city manager, who told the network there were no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by people in the immigrant community. Trump replied that he had seen people on television say dogs had been taken and eaten. Muir reiterated: “Again, the Springfield city manager says there’s no evidence of that.” The September 10 debate transcript records the exchange.

What did Springfield officials say about the allegation?

FactCheck.org reported that Springfield police said there were “no credible reports” of pets being harmed by people in the immigrant community. Its account traced the rumor to a local Facebook group, where the original poster did not claim first-hand knowledge. FactCheck.org’s September 11, 2024, report describes the origin and the police response.

PolitiFact reported that a Springfield spokesperson, the mayor, and city police said the claims that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating residents’ pets were unfounded. The social-media post at the center of the rumor relayed a story attributed to an unidentified person’s neighbor’s daughter’s friend, rather than first-hand corroboration. PolitiFact’s September 9, 2024, account also mentioned a caller’s report of seeing four Haitian people carrying a goose. The article said the city spokesperson reported no city reports of ducks or geese being killed, or other recent crimes attributed to Haitian immigrants. That reported sighting is not evidence for the separate claim that residents’ household pets were taken and eaten.

How to understand the moment

  • Trump’s statement: A claim made during the debate, after the answer had shifted from the immigration bill to rally crowds.
  • The rumor described by fact-checkers: Social-media accounts that were unverified and, as reported, relayed hearsay rather than first-hand corroboration.
  • The official response reported at the time: Springfield officials said there were no credible reports or evidence supporting the pets allegation; Muir relayed the city manager’s response during the debate.

Stewart’s line punctuated the abrupt turn in the exchange. The available transcript documents that reaction, while the debate transcript and contemporaneous fact-checks provide the context and the local officials’ response.
