Jon Stewart did not give Donald Trump a numerical score on a formal authoritarianism scale. In a satirical Daily Show monologue called “How Authoritarian Is We?”, Stewart compared Trump’s style and conduct with authoritarian leaders, then joked that Trump had not shown the “ruthless competence” needed to complete the comparison, according to Rolling Stone Australia’s April 16, 2025, report.
Was Trump given a rank on an authoritarian scale?
No. The phrase “where Trump ranks” refers to Stewart’s comedic comparison, not a measured placement. Rolling Stone Australia’s account provides no score, percentile, methodology, or named political-science index. Stewart’s segment was commentary, not a formal assessment.
What did Stewart compare?
Rolling Stone described the monologue as pointing to the Oval Office’s decor, praise from Trump’s cabinet, laughter at Trump’s jokes, and what Stewart called relentless dissent-crushing. The report also situated the comments amid Trump’s remarks about deporting U.S. citizens, the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and attacks on universities, media outlets, judges, and lawyers. Those are the report’s descriptions of the segment’s context.
Stewart reportedly invoked “your Putins, your Xis, your Anna Wintours” as part of the comparison. He summed up the authoritarian image with this line, as quoted by Rolling Stone: “So Trump’s got it all, authoritarian-wise: the looks, the attitude, the relentless dissent-crushing — All the ingredients to be a top-tier authoritarian.”

What was Stewart’s qualification?
The punchline undercut the comparison: Stewart said Trump had not yet “bring it home with his ruthless competence.” In other words, the joke was not that Trump had earned a verified rank, but that Stewart saw some authoritarian traits while questioning Trump’s ability to execute effectively.
Rolling Stone also quoted Stewart saying, “I did not think we would get this authoritarian this fast.” The quotations and account here are attributed to the publication’s April 16, 2025 report; they are not independently checked against the episode transcript or video.

How should readers interpret “authoritarian scale”?
There is no numerical result to compare with other leaders in this segment. A substantive comparison of political systems would need to define its criteria first—for example, constraints on executive power, treatment of opposition and dissent, press freedom, and the government’s capacity to implement policy. Stewart’s monologue, as reported, did not apply such a framework or claim to measure those dimensions.
