At the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards, John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight team won Outstanding Scripted Variety Series. A September 15 report transcribed Oliver’s closing remarks as a bleeped profanity directed at host Nate Bargatze, followed by a joke about Bargatze’s speech-time “swear jar.” The reported wording is “F— you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you,” then, “You can add a f— to the swear jar as well.” The profanity is a news report’s transcription, not an official written transcript or wording independently confirmed from the video.
What did John Oliver say?
According to ComingSoon’s September 15, 2025 report, Oliver addressed Bargatze with the censored line, “F— you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you.” He followed it with, “You can add a f— to the swear jar as well,” and ended, “That’s got to be enough…. Thank you, goodbye.”

The report’s transcription supplies the answer to what was bleeped, but it should be treated as reported wording rather than an official transcript. The Television Academy’s acceptance-video page confirms the award and acceptance, but its embedded video was not available for independent listening here.
Why did Oliver make the host dig?
Bargatze had announced a donation plan tied to how long winners spoke. In the explanation quoted by ComingSoon, he said each winner had 45 seconds for thank-yous and that coming in under time could put “a $1,000 back on — so you can give it back!”

AOL’s 2025 report described the announced starting donation and adjustment this way:
- $100,000: Bargatze’s announced starting donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America—not a verified final total.
- 45 seconds: the time allowance for thank-yous, as described in the reporting.
- $1,000 per second: the reported adjustment for going over or under the limit.
Oliver’s quick delivery and “swear jar” line played off that timing-and-money setup. The available reporting describes the plan, not an audited final donation amount.

Which Emmy was this?
This was the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in 2025, not Oliver’s separate 2024 Emmy moment. The Television Academy labels its acceptance-video page “Scripted Variety Series: 77th Emmy Awards” and identifies the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver team as accepting the award. The Academy’s 2025 show archive also lists the ceremony’s acceptance video.
