John Cena’s 2025 retirement tour is over. His final match was a loss to Gunther by submission at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The ending closed the tour not with another victory or title, but with a farewell tribute in the ring.
Why the title needs a time update
WWE billed Cena’s 2025 run as a year-long farewell tour and announced that he would retire from in-ring action after it. The tour included WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam. WWE announced the final match for Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., on December 13, 2025. WWE’s announcement made clear that the live question of what Cena could still accomplish had an endpoint.
Before the finale, adding a championship, winning his final match, or facing a particular opponent could be discussed only as possibilities. They should not be presented now as outcomes. WWE’s record of the tour’s close is specific: Cena faced Gunther and lost.
What Cena’s final match accomplished
Gunther defeated Cena by submission. WWE’s official event recap describes Gunther applying a Sleeper Hold after a sequence that included multiple Attitude Adjustments. Cena tapped out, making a defeat—not a last-match win—the verified result of his farewell bout.

After the match, WWE Superstars gathered around the ring. Cody Rhodes and CM Punk placed their championship titles on Cena in a symbolic gesture. Cena left his shoes and wristbands in the ring, then departed after a salute and bow. These moments framed the ending as a tribute to his career rather than a new championship achievement.
Career milestones, not tour accomplishments
In its final-match announcement, WWE cited Cena’s career record as 17 World Championships, five United States Championship reigns, and two Royal Rumble victories. Those are milestones accumulated over his career; they are not new wins credited to the 2025 retirement tour.

The scale of the farewell announcement also drew attention: TKO and WWE reported that Cena’s retirement announcement received more than 65 million social-media views in its first 24 hours. That figure refers to the announcement, not the tour’s total audience or viewership. WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque described Cena’s contributions as “immeasurable”—a tribute from a WWE executive, not a measured statistic.
Tour totals that are not established
The cited official announcements and recap do not establish a tour-wide total for attendance, matches, merchandise revenue, or audience. Without a documented total, those figures should not be inferred from the final event, the announcement’s social-media views, or the tour’s high-profile stops.

Finding a farewell-tour keepsake
WWE Shop listings have included Cena farewell-tour and final-match apparel, and WWE documented a temporary final-match superstore in Washington, D.C., with shirts, accessories, and event-specific replica title merchandise. These records establish that such merchandise existed; they do not confirm current stock or availability through another retailer. Check the specific listing for its item type, event or tour design, and current availability before buying.
WWE’s official record gives the tour a clear ending: Cena’s last match was a submission loss to Gunther, followed by a symbolic in-ring tribute and his departure from the ring. The larger question of what he may do after retirement is separate; the cited announcements do not establish his future plans.
