Jennifer Lopez’s comments about “challenging relationships” were first reported in January 2025 during an interview about Unstoppable and her connection with the film’s subject, Judy Robles—not as an explanation of her marriage to Ben Affleck. Later remarks addressed love, heartbreak and self-acceptance more broadly. A June 2026 account of her SmartLess appearance says she discussed personal growth and complicated relationships without naming Affleck in that conversation.
What Lopez meant by “challenging relationships”
In an interview with Variety about Unstoppable, the film in which Lopez portrayed Judy Robles, Lopez described herself and Robles as “kindred spirits.” E! reported on January 2, 2025 that Lopez said: “We both had challenging relationships, which left us holding our families together.” She was drawing a parallel between their experiences as Latina women in the United States, mothers, and people with hopes for their children. E!’s report also described Lopez and Affleck as having a working relationship on the film.
The wording matters: the quoted remark described a shared background with Robles. It does not establish specific private reasons for Lopez and Affleck’s separation.
How her later comments differed
October 2025: therapy and self-acceptance
In an October 2025 appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Lopez reflected on past relationships, therapy, divorce and self-acceptance, according to Elle’s October 16 report. Elle quoted her saying: “I know who I am, and I just really appreciate that person and feel really comfortable and good in being myself—all the good parts and all of the complicated things.” The focus was how she understood and accepted herself, rather than a new account of the causes of the breakup.

January 2026: love, respect and heartbreak
At a Las Vegas residency appearance, before performing “If You Had My Love,” Lopez spoke about what she expects from love and a partner. Hindustan Times reported her saying that love is complicated and that heartbreak comes with it. She also said a partner would have to earn her love, treat and respect her, and accept her as she is. These were reflections on standards and vulnerability, not a direct statement about Affleck.
June 2026: personal growth on SmartLess
In its June 16, 2026 coverage of Lopez’s SmartLess appearance, ¡HOLA! reported that she discussed personal transformation after the divorce and relationships as complicated. The report says she did not directly name Affleck in that discussion. Its headline connects the divorce to her reflections, but the distinction is important: the reported conversation was about her growth, not an explicit new comment about him.

Where the divorce fits in the timeline
Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024. Later reporting by Elle and Hindustan Times says the divorce was finalized in 2025. That makes the divorce context for her later reflections, not a proceeding still in progress. The January 2025 comment came four months after she filed, but it concerned her comparison with Robles while discussing Unstoppable.
