Jennifer Aniston responded to J.D. Vance’s resurfaced “childless cat ladies” remark by linking his comments about people without children to IVF and reproductive choice. Her Instagram Story was posted on July 24, 2024, after Donald Trump selected Vance as his running mate and Kamala Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee.
What did Jennifer Aniston say about J.D. Vance?
Aniston shared a clip from Vance’s 2021 Fox News interview with Tucker Carlson and wrote: “I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of the United States.”
She then addressed Vance’s daughter and fertility treatment: “Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her too.” ABC News reported on her post and its timing on July 25, 2024 (ABC News).
What was Vance’s “childless cat ladies” remark?
The clip Aniston shared came from a 2021 interview, not a new 2024 speech. Vance said: “We’re effectively run in this country—via the Democrats, via our corporate oligarchs—by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.” He added: “How does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

Vance named Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as examples of Democrats he characterized as people without children. Harris is a stepmother to Doug Emhoff’s two children; Buttigieg and his husband later adopted twins. The Guardian’s account of the controversy also described Harris’s stepfamily and the political dispute over IVF protections (The Guardian).
Why did Aniston bring up IVF?
Aniston’s post connected Vance’s remarks to the possibility that his own daughter might need fertility treatment. She has also spoken publicly about her own experience trying to have a child. In an interview with Allure, she said: “It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,” and described going through IVF and trying other approaches (Allure).

IVF was also part of the political argument surrounding Vance. The Guardian reported that Harris said Vance had participated in blocking IVF protections and indicated support for a national abortion ban. Aniston’s post presented the issue as a question of whether women should retain access to IVF; it did not itself offer a detailed account of the proposals or legislation at issue.
How did people respond to the comment?
Harris’s family challenged the “childless” label
Kerstin Emhoff, Harris’s former spouse and the mother of Cole and Ella Emhoff, called attacks on Harris “baseless.” She said Harris had co-parented the children for more than 10 years and was “loving, nurturing, fiercely protective and always present.” Ella Emhoff wrote, “I love my three parents.”

Buttigieg spoke about adoption and loss
Buttigieg said the remark came after he and his husband had experienced “a fairly heartbreaking setback in our adoption journey.” He added: “maybe that’s why you shouldn’t be talking about other people’s children.”
Vance and his campaign called the remark sarcasm
A Vance campaign spokesperson said his words had been twisted and taken out of context. Vance later described the remark as sarcastic and said it was a joke made to advance a substantive point about what he called an anti-family country. In an August interview reported by Axios, he said it was not among his top regrets (Axios).

What was at stake in the disagreement?
The argument turned on more than the tone of Vance’s phrase. His critics saw “childless cat ladies” as a gendered dismissal of people without biological children and as a way to question their stake in public life. The responses from Harris’s family and Buttigieg also highlighted how the label failed to account for step-parenting, adoption and the difficulty of infertility.
Vance’s explanation framed the remark as sarcasm in service of a broader criticism of family policy and social conditions. Aniston’s reply instead focused on the personal consequences she associated with IVF access and the prospect of a future vice president speaking about families in those terms.
