In a recap of episode seven of JAŸ-Z IN 8, Complex reports that Jay-Z recalled the missed session as the point when he stopped asking Nas for anything. He also characterized the rivalry as personal at times but driven mainly by competition, and said they are close now.
Jay-Z’s account of how the conflict began
According to Complex’s recap, Jay-Z said Nas was expected to appear at the studio for a session for Reasonable Doubt but did not come. Jay-Z reportedly described that as the moment he stopped asking Nas for anything. The account is Jay-Z’s recollection as reported by Complex, not an independently confirmed explanation from both artists.
Complex quoted Jay-Z saying, “Nas was supposed to be on my first album; he just never showed up to the studio.” The quotation is reproduced in the outlet’s recap; an official series transcript was not available to verify it independently.
How Jay-Z described the rivalry
Complex reports that Jay-Z said the conflict later became personal, while remaining mainly about competition. He also reportedly believed that a lyric in Nas’s “The Message” was probably aimed at him. That interpretation, like the account of the missed session, should be understood as Jay-Z’s reported view rather than an established account from Nas.

As quoted by Complex, Jay-Z said, “It got personal… but it was more about competition.” The summary places the rivalry in the context of the artists’ early careers: Reasonable Doubt and Nas’s It Was Written were released about a week apart in 1996, according to Complex. The outlet’s timing has not been independently verified here.
What Jay-Z said about their relationship now

Where the story appears in the series
JAŸ-Z IN 8 is an eight-part HBO docuseries featuring Jay-Z in conversation with Rick Rubin. Apple TV describes it as a discussion of Jay-Z’s music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process. Complex says the series runs for more than seven hours and covers more than 25 songs from Jay-Z’s career; those are the outlet’s descriptions of the series.
The Nas discussion appears near the end of episode seven, according to Complex. Apple TV’s synopsis for episode two refers to early fame, East Coast–West Coast rap beef, and Jay-Z’s relationships with The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac. The series’ broader scope helps place the Nas account among its discussions of Jay-Z’s career, but the reported origin story itself remains a recollection attributed to Jay-Z.
