He was not an Olympic swimmer—or an Olympian: he tried out for the Olympic teams but did not make either one.
He was a competitive diver, not a swimmer
Statham took up diving as a boy after seeing a high diver during a family holiday in Florida. He told the BBC in 2008 that he joined a diving club at about 11 or 12 and was on the British team within a year; Team England quoted that account in its 2024 retrospective. He spent about a decade in the sport.
At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, Statham competed for England in three events. Team England records his results as follows:

He also competed in trials for the Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992 Olympic teams, but did not qualify for either. The distinction matters: Statham was a high-level diver who pursued Olympic selection, not an Olympic competitor. Team England’s account and results are in its 2024 retrospective.

He modeled and appeared in music videos
After diving, Statham worked as a model. Biography.com reports that he worked with French Connection, Levi’s and Hilfiger. He also appeared as a background dancer in early-1990s music videos, including The Shamen’s “Comin’ On” and Erasure’s “Run to the Sun.” These were steps in his working life before acting, rather than evidence of an established screen career.
He sold goods at London street markets
Statham also sold goods on London streets. The Guardian described him hawking inexpensive costume jewelry; Biography.com recounts his account of selling fake perfume and stolen jewelry. The sources differ on the details, so the safest summary is that he worked as a street-market seller and that jewelry and perfume feature in accounts of the job—not that any one list of goods is a fully verified inventory.
In a 2015 Guardian interview, Statham reflected on how late he had started diving by elite-sport standards: “You have to start when you’re five years old; when I started at 12, it’s way late. You need pro coaches; my coach was a chartered accountant.” The interview also discusses the market-selling background and is available at The Guardian.

According to Biography.com, Statham’s French Connection modeling connection helped him get an audition for Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He was cast as Bacon in the 1998 film, his acting debut. Biography.com says he had no acting training or experience at the time. His route to acting therefore ran through several kinds of work: competitive diving, modeling, music-video appearances and street selling. The sports record is particularly clear about what he did—and did not achieve: Commonwealth Games representation and Olympic trials, but no place on an Olympic team.
