He later described a brain bleed that led to a stroke. Those details are Foxx’s account as reported by ABC News; they do not independently establish how long he was unconscious or hospitalized.
What did Jamie Foxx mean by “gone for 20 days”?
In comments reported by ABC News on July 2, 2024, Foxx recalled: “April 11 last year, bad headache, asked my boy for an Advil. I was gone for 20 days. I don’t remember anything.” The phrase describes the period he said he could not remember. It does not, by itself, mean he was unconscious for exactly 20 days or spent exactly 20 days in the hospital.
Foxx said his sister and daughter took him to doctors. In that July account, he did not disclose on camera what doctors had diagnosed.
What did Foxx later say happened?
In his December 2024 Netflix comedy special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, Foxx described a brain bleed that led to a stroke. ABC News reported that he said he woke on May 4 in a wheelchair and was told he could not walk. These are details of Foxx’s recollection, not independently confirmed medical findings in the cited reporting.

How the account developed
| When | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| April 11, 2023 | Foxx later said the episode began with a bad headache and that he asked for an Advil. | The date and symptoms are part of his retrospective account. |
| July 2024 | Foxx described a 20-day memory gap but did not state his diagnosis on camera. | He said he could not remember that period; the comment does not specify its precise medical cause or duration of hospitalization. |
| December 2024 | In his comedy special, Foxx described a brain bleed leading to a stroke and recounted waking in a wheelchair on May 4. | This was a fuller explanation from Foxx, still presented in the reporting as his account. |
ABC News also reported that Foxx was hospitalized while filming Back in Action and cited his daughter Corinne’s initial description of a medical complication and recovery. The account appeared in two stages: Foxx withheld the diagnosis in his July comments, then gave the brain-bleed-and-stroke explanation in December.
What is confirmed by the available reporting?
ABC News reported Foxx’s statements and the family context, but the cited coverage does not provide medical records or an independent clinician’s confirmation. The most precise reading is therefore that Foxx said he lost 20 days of memory and later described the event as a brain bleed that led to a stroke—not that reporting independently verifies an exact period of unconsciousness or hospitalization.
