James Van Der Beek said The Real Full Monty taught him the value of asking for help and finding a supportive group. “It’s so much better, it’s safety in numbers,” he told PEOPLE in an interview published December 9, 2024.
What did The Real Full Monty teach James Van Der Beek?
Van Der Beek’s takeaway was that people do not have to face difficult experiences alone. Reflecting on the Fox special, he said he had been among the men who were reluctant to ask for help, but that taking part with a group showed him the value of support.
“For me, what I realized was just how important it is to get a supportive group together no matter what you’re going through. I think a lot of men — I know I was one of those — are just never wanting to ask help for anything. But being in a group like this, you realize, oh, it’s so much better, it’s safety in numbers.”
The quotation is from Van Der Beek’s interview with PEOPLE, published December 9, 2024. He described a personal lesson about peer support and asking for help, not a medical finding about cancer outcomes.

Why did the performance involve letting their guard down?
The special brought together six men for a group strip-tease dance, performed before a live audience after rehearsals. Van Der Beek connected that physical vulnerability with the mental barriers some people may feel around men’s health exams. The performance was intended to draw attention to testing and research for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancers; it was not itself screening guidance.
The participants were Van Der Beek, Anthony Anderson, Taye Diggs, Chris Jones, Tyler Posey, and Bruno Tonioli. Choreographer Mandy Moore created the routine. Anderson, an executive producer as well as a participant, described the special’s message as encouraging people not to let embarrassment stop them from getting checked, in a PEOPLE announcement published May 13, 2024.

How was Van Der Beek’s cancer diagnosis part of the context?
By the time of the December interview, Van Der Beek had publicly disclosed a colorectal cancer diagnosis. PEOPLE reported the disclosure on November 8, 2024, and later described him as recently diagnosed in its interview. His reflection on finding support came in that context, but he did not claim that participating in the special changed a medical outcome. His diagnosis is not a substitute for individualized advice about screening or care.
