In a conversation with Rachael Ray reported by People on November 5, 2024, Pépin described not knowing how to handle checks, bank information and bills. Gloria died on December 5, 2020, at age 83.
What did Jacques Pépin mean when he said he was “totally lost” after his wife died?
Pépin was describing a practical gap in the life they had shared. As People reported from his conversation with Rachael Ray, Gloria had taken care of financial matters that he had not handled himself. “She took care of things that I didn’t take care of,” he said. He added: “I’m totally lost. She took care of that. I never took care of that.”
The remarks were reported nearly four years after Gloria’s death. In context, “totally lost” referred to checks, bank balances and bills Gloria had managed; it should not be read as a broad description of Pépin’s functioning or as a clinical assessment.
When did Gloria Pépin die?
Gloria Pépin died on December 5, 2020, at age 83, according to the family account cited by People. The report said family and friends were with her and did not state a cause of death.

How has Pépin described life after Gloria’s death?
Missing the ritual of dinner together
In an interview published by The Boston Globe on October 12, 2023, Pépin recalled that he and Gloria had shared dinner and wine at night for 54 years. “After 54 years, we sat down at night with a bottle of wine and shared our dinner. It’s the one thing I miss the most,” he said. He described missing a familiar daily routine as well as his partner.
Cooking for himself
Pépin has also spoken about having less motivation to cook for himself after Gloria died. In the Globe interview, he described his meals as simpler and said, “I’m happy with just a bowl of soup these days.” AARP’s July 16, 2024, interview likewise discussed his simpler cooking and identified Cooking My Way as his latest cookbook at that time. That description reflects the 2024 interview, not a claim about his newest book today; the cookbook is cooking guidance, not a remedy for bereavement.
