On April 6, 2025, J.K. Rowling posted remarks mocking International Asexuality Day and questioning asexuality. The posts drew attention partly because Rowling is an executive producer of HBO’s Harry Potter television adaptation. The available reporting establishes that timing and her production role, but not that the series prompted her comments or that they changed the show.
What did J.K. Rowling say about asexual people?
On International Asexuality Day, April 6, 2025, Rowling posted above an awareness-day graphic: “Happy International Fake Oppression Day to everyone who wants complete strangers to know they don’t fancy a shag,” according to PinkNews’ April 7 report. The IMDb-syndicated CBR report quoted follow-up remarks including “How do asexual people know whether they’re gay or straight, I wonder?” and “I want an International Bored Of This Shit day.”

Those quotations convey Rowling’s own wording; describing the posts as an “attack” is a characterization of their tone and target, not a separate fact about her intent. The reports document the posts and their language, but do not establish a direct response from a named asexual community representative or measure their impact.
What is asexuality?
Asexuality generally describes experiencing little or no sexual attraction. It is a spectrum, and people’s experiences vary. Sexual attraction is not the same as romantic attraction, libido, sexual behavior, or the ability or desire to have relationships. A person’s asexuality alone does not determine whether they are gay, straight, or another romantic orientation.
#1 Best Overall
For scale, PinkNews reported that 28,000 people—0.06% of the population—identified as asexual in the 2021 census for England and Wales. That figure applies to that census and geography; it is not a global estimate.
Why is the Harry Potter TV series connected to the controversy?
The connection is Rowling’s role in the adaptation, alongside the timing of the posts. In April 2025, coverage described the television project as forthcoming and identified Rowling as an executive producer. An HBO spokesperson told PinkNews that her views had not affected casting or the hiring of writers or production staff. That is the company’s statement, not an independently verified finding.

The chronology does not show that the series prompted the April 6 posts, that the remarks were part of the show’s creative process, or that they changed production decisions. A producer credit establishes a role on the project, not a causal link between the project and unrelated public comments.

HBO’s official announcement dated July 14, 2025 said production was underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, listed Rowling among the executive producers, and said the series was set to premiere in 2027. That is the schedule stated in the announcement; it is a dated plan, not a guarantee that the date cannot change.

This later update supersedes April 2025 descriptions of the adaptation as still in development. It confirms production status and Rowling’s credit, but does not add evidence connecting the series to her posts about asexuality.
