The platform’s main idea is aggregation. Instead of opening Netflix, a live-TV app, a free movie service, and other apps separately, Xumo brings supported services, live channels, on-demand programming, recommendations, voice search, and watchlists into one interface. It can simplify how you find something to watch, but it does not make paid subscriptions free or replace every cable, streaming, or live-TV service.
Xumo at a glance
| Part of Xumo | What it is | What you pay | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xumo Play | Free, ad-supported live channels and on-demand movies and shows | No paid subscription for the Xumo Play service; advertisements are included | A supported device and an internet connection |
| Xumo Stream Box | A separate streaming box that connects to a television through HDMI | Price and provider terms vary; some internet or cable providers bundle or subsidize it | An HDMI-compatible TV and internet service |
| Xumo TV | A smart-TV platform built into selected televisions | Included as part of the television; the TV’s purchase price varies | A compatible Xumo TV and internet connection for streaming |
That distinction matters. When someone says they “have Xumo,” they could mean a free streaming app, a streaming box supplied by a broadband provider, or a television with Xumo built in.
Who owns Xumo?
Xumo operates as a streaming-platform joint venture associated with Comcast and Charter Communications. The companies announced the Xumo brand for their joint venture on November 2, 2022.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Comcast brought several existing assets to the venture: its Flex aggregation platform and hardware, the XClass TV retail business, and the Xumo service it had acquired in 2020. Charter committed an initial $900 million over multiple years. The venture was designed to operate separately from the companies’ underlying broadband and traditional cable-video businesses.
Xumo says its brand history goes back to 2011. Its published milestones include:
- 2015: The free streaming app launched on VIZIO televisions.
- 2021: Xumo’s smart-TV operating system launched on Hisense televisions.
- 2022: Comcast’s Flex device became Xumo Stream Box, and Xumo’s free service was rebranded Xumo Play.
- 2023: Xumo TV expanded to Element and Pioneer televisions.
- 2024: Distribution expanded through providers including Cox and Mediacom.
- 2025: Xumo TV expanded to Westinghouse and Sharp televisions, among other distribution developments.
So Xumo is best understood as a combined platform, content, hardware, and distribution business—not simply a Comcast-branded version of Netflix.
What is Xumo Play?
Xumo Play is Xumo’s free, ad-supported streaming television service. It is commonly grouped with FAST services, or free ad-supported streaming television platforms. Xumo Play provides live, linear channels alongside on-demand movies and television programs.
Xumo’s consumer pages currently describe Xumo Play as offering more than 350 live channels and tens of thousands of on-demand titles. Those figures should not be treated as permanent: channel lineups, title counts, and individual programs can change as licensing and programming agreements change.
What can you watch on Xumo Play?
The lineup can include channels and programs centered on:
- News and current affairs
- Movies and television genres
- Reality programming
- Sports-related programming
- Children’s shows
- Music and comedy
- True crime and documentary-style programming
- Themed entertainment channels
It is a broad free-TV service rather than a guarantee of access to every specific movie, series, sports league, or local broadcast channel. A title or channel available today may move, disappear, or become unavailable in a particular territory later.
Is Xumo Play actually free?
Yes, Xumo Play itself is free and ad-supported. You do not need to pay for a Xumo Play subscription to access its free programming. You do, however, need a compatible device and an internet connection, and you will see advertising during the free service.
“Free” does not mean that everything inside the broader Xumo interface is free. Xumo may also show paid streaming apps and subscription content in search results or recommendations. Those services continue to set their own prices and terms.

Where can you watch Xumo Play?
Xumo Play is available through a wide range of access points, although the exact selection depends on your country, device model, and distribution partner. Supported routes listed by Xumo include:
- Xumo Stream Box and Xumo TV
- Desktop web browsers
- iPhone and iPad
- Android phones and tablets
- Android TV and Google TV
- Chromecast
- Roku
- Fire TV
- Selected Samsung, Sony, Hisense, and VIZIO devices
- Selected Xfinity, Rogers, Shaw, and Sky devices
Xumo’s support documentation identifies the United States as a primary market. It also lists access in Canada through Rogers and Shaw Ignite TV devices and in the United Kingdom through Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices. Access from other territories is restricted, and an app or channel available in the United States may not be available on the same device elsewhere.
Before buying hardware specifically for Xumo Play, check both the platform’s country availability and the exact model’s supported apps. A television brand may sell different operating systems in different regions, and a provider-branded device may have features that are unavailable on a retail model.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is Xumo Stream Box?
Xumo Stream Box is a separate streaming device that plugs into an HDMI port on your television. It is designed for people who already own a TV but want a more unified way to access free channels, live television, on-demand content, recommendations, and subscription apps.
You do not need a smart TV to use it. You need:
- An HDMI-compatible television
- An internet connection
- Power for the Stream Box
- Accounts and subscriptions for any paid services you want to use
What does Xumo Stream Box do?
The box is intended to be a single front door for multiple streaming sources. Its main features include:
- Universal search: Search for a movie, show, actor, or other programming across supported apps and services. The included voice remote can be used for voice commands.
- My List: Build cross-service watchlists rather than saving titles separately in every app. Xumo says the Stream Box supports up to five distinct lists.
- Live-TV integration: Where supported by the service or provider, live-TV sources and Xumo Play content can appear alongside app-based streaming.
- Preloaded apps: Xumo says more than 300 apps come preloaded, reducing the need to find and install each supported app individually.
- 4K and HDR support: Xumo lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HEVC 10-bit 4K at up to 60 frames per second, AVC up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, and AV1 among the device’s video capabilities.
Technical capability is not the same as a guarantee that every program will play in 4K or HDR. The television, app, title, subscription tier, internet connection, and content rights all affect the final picture quality.
Stream Box connectivity
Xumo lists the following hardware features for the Stream Box:
- HDMI 2.1
- 10/100 Ethernet
- Dual-band Wi-Fi 6
- Bluetooth 5.0
- Infrared support
Wi-Fi is convenient, while Ethernet can be useful if the television is near a router or if you want a wired connection. Neither connection method creates a subscription or supplies content by itself; it simply gets the box online.
How do you get a Xumo Stream Box?
Availability depends heavily on your provider and market. Xumo lists provider distribution through companies including Xfinity, Spectrum, and Mediacom, while announcements and provider materials have also documented relationships involving Cox, GCI, and others at different times.
Rank #3
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
A provider may:
- Include one Stream Box with an internet or television plan
- Charge a recurring service or equipment fee
- Offer additional boxes for purchase
- Restrict certain integrations to its own customers
Xumo also presents a direct-purchase route on its consumer site, but there is no single universal price that applies to every market and sales channel. For context, a GCI announcement from December 2024 listed a $59.99 retail price for GCI customers. That figure should not be generalized to every provider or direct-sale option.
If a provider is offering you a “free” Stream Box, read the offer details carefully. The device may be included only with a particular plan, may carry a service fee, or may be free for one unit but chargeable for additional units.
What is Xumo TV?
Xumo TV is the Xumo smart-TV platform built into selected television models. It combines a television’s hardware with Xumo’s interface, app catalog, voice search, recommendations, and access to Xumo Play.
The practical difference between Xumo TV and Xumo Stream Box is where the platform lives:
- Xumo TV: Buy a compatible television and the Xumo experience is built into the set. There is no separate Xumo box to connect.
- Xumo Stream Box: Keep your current television and add Xumo through an HDMI-connected device.
Xumo’s television search pages list models from Element, Pioneer, Westinghouse, and Sharp. Available sizes and resolutions vary by brand and model, from smaller HD televisions to larger 4K sets. Do not assume that every model from one of these brands uses Xumo TV; verify the operating system and exact model number before buying.
In July 2025, Xumo announced the nationwide launch of Westinghouse Xumo TVs, including 4K UHD and HD models, with availability through Amazon.com and Walmart.com. If you are replacing the television rather than adding a box, a Westinghouse Xumo TV is one built-in option to compare. Check the exact screen size, resolution, price, warranty, and current retailer availability because those details vary.

Does Xumo include Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or Prime Video for free?
No. Xumo can make supported apps easier to find, and some apps may be preloaded on a Stream Box or included in a television’s app catalog. That does not include the paid subscription.
Xumo’s app documentation lists services such as:
- Netflix
- Hulu
- Prime Video
- Disney+
- Max
- Peacock
It also lists free services such as Xumo Play, Tubi, Pluto TV, and iHeartRadio. The distinction is important: a preloaded app is only an entry point. You still need to sign in and pay the relevant provider for any service that requires a subscription.
Xumo’s Stream Box page currently advertises a limited-time offer of six months of Peacock Premium for eligible customers who subscribe on a Xumo device. The offer is subject to its terms and eligibility rules, and the then-current price applies afterward unless the subscription is canceled. Treat this as a temporary promotion, not a permanent benefit of owning Xumo hardware.

How Xumo’s interface is different
Xumo’s central selling point is discovery across services. Universal search can help you find where a title is available without checking each app manually. Recommendations and My List are intended to reduce the friction of remembering which app contains a particular program.
The platform also has a stronger live-TV orientation than a setup built entirely around opening separate on-demand apps. Xumo Play’s free channels, provider-supported live-TV integration, and app-based services can appear in the same general viewing environment.
There are limits to aggregation:
- Search may cover only supported services and may not expose every title in every app.
- A title can appear in search but still require a separate subscription or rental payment.
- Live-TV integration can differ by provider, device, and country.
- Recommendations are not a replacement for checking the actual service, price, or availability.
Xumo compared with Roku, Fire TV, and Google TV
Xumo belongs to the same broad category as Roku, Fire TV, and Google TV: each can provide a television interface for accessing multiple streaming services. The best choice depends less on a universal ranking and more on the apps, hardware, search behavior, and live-TV features that matter to your household.
| Question | Why it matters when comparing platforms |
|---|---|
| Do you watch free live channels? | Xumo’s combination of Xumo Play and a live-TV-oriented interface may be appealing, but compare the actual channel lineup rather than relying on the platform name. |
| Do you already own a TV? | A Stream Box adds Xumo through HDMI. A Roku, Fire TV, or Google TV device may also be an alternative, so compare price, remote, search, and supported apps. |
| Are you buying a new TV? | Xumo TV places the platform inside selected television models. Check picture quality, size, warranty, updates, and price—not just the operating system. |
| Do you rely on a particular app? | Confirm that the app is supported on the exact model and in your country. App catalogs and features can change. |
| Do you want an ad-free experience? | Xumo Play is ad-supported, and any advertising or subscription rules for third-party services remain controlled by those services. |
| Do you get equipment from an internet provider? | Provider distribution can make Xumo Stream Box convenient or inexpensive, but fees, eligibility, and live-TV integration vary. |
Xumo’s distinctive positioning is the combination of free live-style channels, aggregation, voice navigation, and provider distribution. That is a reason to consider it, not proof that it is universally better than competing platforms.
How to choose between Xumo Play, Stream Box, and Xumo TV
- Choose Xumo Play if you want free, ad-supported channels and on-demand programming and already have a compatible TV, phone, computer, or streaming device.
- Choose Xumo Stream Box if your current TV works well but you want a unified interface, voice search, cross-service watchlists, and access to Xumo Play without buying a new television.
- Choose Xumo TV if you are already shopping for a new television and prefer the Xumo interface built into the set.
For a new-TV purchase, evaluate the display itself first: screen size, resolution, HDR performance, viewing angle, warranty, ports, and price. The operating system affects daily usability, but it cannot compensate for a television that is the wrong size or has poor picture quality for your room.

Setting up Xumo Play
- Use a supported phone, tablet, computer, television, or streaming device.
- Connect the device to the internet.
- Open Xumo Play through the device’s supported app or web access.
- Browse live channels or on-demand categories, or use search where available.
The exact sign-in and account steps can vary by device and distribution partner. Availability is also subject to regional restrictions.
Setting up Xumo Stream Box
- Connect the box to an open HDMI port on the TV.
- Connect power and select the matching HDMI input.
- Complete the on-screen network setup.
- Sign in to the streaming services you already subscribe to.
- Use universal search, voice commands, recommendations, and My List to organize viewing.
Seeing an app on the device does not mean you have an account for it. You may use free services such as Xumo Play, Tubi, or Pluto TV without paying those services, while Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, Max, Peacock, and similar services require their own terms and subscriptions where applicable.
Setting up Xumo TV
Because Xumo TV is built into the television, setup takes place through the TV’s initial configuration. Connect the set to the internet, complete the television setup, and use the included remote to open the Xumo interface and supported apps. The available features depend on the exact television model and region.

Common points of confusion and failure
“The app is installed, so why is it asking me to pay?”
Installation is not a subscription. Xumo may preload or display an app, but paid services still require your own account and plan. A title may also be available only as a rental or purchase within a service.

“I cannot find a channel I saw advertised.”
Check your country, device model, provider, and the current channel listing. Xumo Play’s catalog is dynamic, and distribution rights can differ between the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other territories.
“My TV is branded by a listed Xumo TV manufacturer. Why does it not have Xumo TV?”
Brand compatibility is not enough. Manufacturers can sell multiple operating systems and model ranges. Confirm that the exact model is labeled as a Xumo TV before purchasing.
“Why am I not getting 4K?”
The Stream Box can support listed 4K formats, but 4K playback also depends on the title, app, subscription tier, television, connection, and content rights. Check each part of that chain rather than assuming the box or TV is defective.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“Is the Stream Box free?”
Not universally. Some providers bundle or subsidize it, while others charge a fee or sell it separately. Ask what the equipment costs, whether there is a monthly charge, and what happens if you cancel the associated service.
Who should use Xumo?
Xumo is a good fit for viewers who:
- Want free, ad-supported channels in addition to paid streaming apps
- Prefer live-TV-style browsing instead of opening apps one at a time
- Want voice search through a remote
- Receive a Stream Box through a participating internet or cable provider
- Want a simpler front door to several streaming services
- Are buying a new television and like the idea of Xumo built in
It may be less compelling if you:
- Already prefer another streaming platform’s interface and remote
- Need a particular app that is unavailable in your region or on your exact model
- Want a completely ad-free viewing experience
- Expect every service shown in the interface to be included at no extra cost
- Want a complete replacement for cable, local channels, premium sports, or every paid streaming service
Xumo can make streaming easier to navigate, but it does not remove the underlying trade-offs of internet television: ads, separate subscriptions, regional rights, changing catalogs, and the need for a reliable connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Xumo the same as Xumo Play?
No. Xumo is the broader brand and platform. Xumo Play is its free, ad-supported streaming service. Xumo also makes the Xumo Stream Box and provides Xumo TV software built into selected televisions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need Xfinity to use Xumo?
Not necessarily. Xumo Play is available through web, mobile, and selected third-party devices and services. A Xumo Stream Box, however, may be distributed with provider-specific terms, fees, or integrations, so availability does not work the same way in every market.
Can I use Xumo with a regular, non-smart TV?
Yes, if the TV has an HDMI input and you have internet access. Xumo Stream Box is designed to add the Xumo interface to an existing television. You do not need to replace that TV with a Xumo TV.
Does Xumo replace Netflix or cable?
No. Xumo Play supplies free, ad-supported programming, and the wider Xumo interface can organize supported apps and live-TV sources. Netflix and other paid services still require their own subscriptions, while cable replacement depends on the separate live-TV services and channels available in your area.
Can I watch Xumo outside the United States?
Xumo’s support documentation lists Canada through Rogers and Shaw Ignite TV devices and the United Kingdom through Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices. Availability elsewhere is restricted and can vary by device, partner, and country, so check the current regional support information before relying on the service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Bottom line: Xumo is a three-part streaming ecosystem: Xumo Play provides free, ad-supported channels and on-demand content; Xumo Stream Box adds Xumo to an existing HDMI television; and Xumo TV builds the experience into selected smart TVs. Its advantage is aggregation and live-TV-friendly discovery. Its limits are equally important: paid apps remain paid, Xumo Play contains advertising, catalogs and hardware offers change, and availability varies by country, device, model, and provider.
