Its writer-director, Zach Cregger, has said that personal tragedy informed the film and called it autobiographical “in a lot of ways”—but that describes its emotional and personal roots, not proof that its central events happened.
What is Weapons about?
The film begins with a disturbing mystery: at 2:17 a.m., all but one child from the same class disappear. The vanishings unsettle the small community of Maybrook, Illinois, and leave residents asking who—or what—is responsible. Maybrook is fictional, according to the Associated Press. The premise is best approached as a spoiler-light setup; explaining what happened would give away the mystery.

Written and directed by Zach Cregger, Weapons is a horror-thriller with an ensemble cast that includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay, and Cregger composed the music.
Is Weapons based on a true story?
The sources do not establish the film’s class disappearance as a real event. The opening line, “This is a true story,” is spoken by a child narrator in the movie, as the Associated Press review reports. It is part of the film’s framing, not independent verification that the events occurred.

In an August 8, 2025 interview with Slashfilm, Cregger said a “personal tragedy” in his life inspired the film. Asked how personal the story was, he answered, “It’s an autobiographical movie in a lot of ways.” He described the process as looking inward and taking stock of his life. Those comments point to personal and emotional material; they do not establish that the missing children or the events in Maybrook are real.
What inspired Cregger’s approach?
Cregger named Magnolia as a major influence and said Pulp Fiction led him to consider a less conventional story structure. Those are creative influences, not source material: Weapons is not described as an adaptation of either film.
