VRAM is the fast memory a graphics card uses to hold data needed to render images. There is no universal amount required for streaming with OBS: the right capacity depends chiefly on whether you are gaming on the same PC, and on the game, resolution, graphics settings, OBS scene, and other GPU workloads.
What VRAM does
Video RAM, or VRAM, is high-speed memory on or associated with a graphics card. It holds graphics data the GPU needs, such as textures and shaders, so the GPU can render and display images. NVIDIA describes it as high-speed memory located on the graphics card; AMD likewise describes fast onboard memory for graphics assets.
Capacity is only one part of a graphics card’s capability. More VRAM does not by itself mean a faster GPU or guarantee smooth gameplay or streaming. Rendering performance, memory capacity, encoder support, and the workload all matter.
How much VRAM do you need for OBS?
OBS does not publish a minimum VRAM capacity for streaming. Its system-requirements page specifies operating-system and graphics-API compatibility, but cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee the system can stream or record. The practical answer is workload-dependent, not a fixed number.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you stream a camera or video
For a stream that does not include demanding gameplay on the same PC, consider the GPU work involved in your capture sources, resolution, effects, and OBS scene. A simple scene and a complex scene with multiple sources and filters do not impose the same rendering workload. OBS does not turn these differences into a specific VRAM minimum.
If you stream games from the same PC
The game and OBS share the GPU’s resources. The game renders its graphics while OBS renders and composites the stream scene. Higher resolution, detailed textures, ray tracing, a high frame rate, complex OBS scenes, and other GPU-using applications can increase demand. If the GPU is overloaded, OBS performance can suffer; reducing game graphics settings or frame rate can help.

One manufacturer example illustrates why workload matters, but is not a streaming recommendation: AMD lists its Radeon RX 7700 XT with 12 GB of video memory for a 1440p gaming target. In a separate AMD test, Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, maximum settings, and high ray tracing reached peak use of 11.7 GB on an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB. That is one vendor test under specified gaming conditions, not a universal game requirement and not an OBS minimum.
VRAM is not the same as encoding capacity
OBS can use supported hardware encoders to move video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. Its hardware-encoding guidance covers NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video, subject to hardware and software compatibility. These encoders can reduce CPU encoding work, but they do not remove the GPU work OBS needs to render and composite scenes.

Codec and encoder compatibility depend on the GPU generation and streaming platform. NVIDIA’s January 30, 2025 OBS guide recommends H.264 NVENC for Twitch and suggests AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs, or HEVC otherwise. Treat those as dated, platform-specific recommendations and check current platform support and your GPU’s capabilities before choosing a codec.
How to choose a GPU for streaming
Compare the whole workload rather than buying on VRAM capacity alone. These factors help frame the decision:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Game and target settings: Identify the games, resolution, frame rate, texture quality, and ray-tracing settings you actually intend to use.
- GPU performance and memory: Consider rendering capability alongside VRAM capacity. Neither figure alone describes how well a card will handle your complete workload.
- OBS workload: Account for scene complexity, capture sources, filters, and whether other applications will use the GPU at the same time.
- Encoder and codec support: Check that the GPU’s hardware encoder works with your software and that your streaming platform supports the selected codec.
- Headroom: Avoid planning for a system where the game consumes all available GPU capacity; OBS still needs resources to render the stream scene.
What to try if OBS struggles
When a stream stutters or OBS reports rendering trouble, do not assume VRAM capacity is the only cause. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance points to GPU overload as a possible issue. Reduce the workload and check whether performance improves:
- Lower demanding game settings, especially resolution-related details, textures, or ray tracing.
- Reduce the game’s frame rate if it is using too much GPU capacity.
- Simplify the OBS scene by disabling unnecessary sources or filters.
- Close other GPU-using applications and retest the stream.
- Review the hardware-encoder and codec compatibility for your GPU and platform; a hardware encoder handles encoding work, not scene compositing.
