Video encoding converts raw or edited video into a digital format an encoder can send to YouTube Live. For a reliable stream, choose a supported codec and resolution your equipment can produce, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination, set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and test the upload connection under realistic conditions.
What video encoding means for a live stream
An encoder compresses and packages video (and usually audio) into a format that can travel over the internet to YouTube. It can be software running on a computer or a standalone hardware device. The encoder’s outgoing signal is the input YouTube receives; YouTube then transcodes the live input into playback formats for different devices and network conditions.
Hardware encoding is useful in some external AV and multi-camera setups, but it is not required for ordinary YouTube Live encoding settings. The encoder itself also cannot compensate for an upload connection that cannot sustain the stream.
YouTube Live settings to use
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends the following general settings. Exact bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the table below rather than treating any single bitrate as universal.

| Ingestion resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
YouTube also gives minimum bitrates, which are lower than these recommendations. For example, at 1080p30 its stated minimums are 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60 they are 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. A minimum is not the same as the recommended target. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table when selecting a less common resolution or codec.
Advanced video and audio settings
- Picture format: square pixels and progressive scan.
- Compression options: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC entropy coding.
- SDR: Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265, specifies 10-bit, and does not support AV1 for HDR. For AV1 at 3840Ă—2160 and above, YouTube calls for at least two tile columns.
- Audio sampling: 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 surround.
- Audio bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1 surround.
How to choose the right resolution, codec, and bitrate
1. Match the stream to the content and equipment
Choose the resolution and frame rate your camera, capture system, and encoder can produce consistently. Fast-moving gameplay or sports may benefit from 60 fps if the whole chain can sustain it. A mostly static presentation or documentary discussion may not need 60 fps. Higher resolution and frame rate raise the bitrate demand, so do not select them simply because they are available.

2. Select a supported codec
Use a codec supported by both your encoder and the intended workflow. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and states AV1 is not supported for HDR. If the encoder has multiple H.264 presets or profiles, verify that the resulting stream meets YouTube’s requirements rather than assuming the codec name alone guarantees compatibility.
3. Set the bitrate from YouTube’s table
Find the row matching the stream’s ingestion resolution and frame rate, then use the recommendation for the selected codec. Confirm that the encoder is actually sending that resolution and frame rate; a setting in a menu does not ensure the source or output matches it.

4. Verify upload capacity in practice
Your connection must reliably sustain the chosen outgoing stream. YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage, and a speed-test result is not proof of stable throughput throughout a broadcast. Test using the same connection and representative conditions you expect during the event. Its encoder settings guidance and live streaming tips advise testing and monitoring stream health.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. YouTube can detect encoder settings automatically; a custom stream key is an option when you need manual selection.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream setup and enter them in your encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields. The URL tells the encoder where to send data; the key associates that feed with the correct live setup. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions.
- Configure the output for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, recommended bitrate, CBR, two-second keyframes, and audio settings.
- Start a private or unlisted test with the same kind of movement and audio as the planned program. Check that YouTube receives the expected signal and that the stream-health messages show no ongoing problem.
- Monitor while live. Watch the encoder and Live Control Room for dropped frames, bitrate instability, or other stream-health warnings.
Treat the stream key as a credential. Do not publish it or include it in a screen share. If it is compromised, YouTube’s live stream settings page explains how to reset it in Live Control Room.

Latency: when to trade delay for interaction
Latency is the delay between capture and playback for viewers. Lower latency can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube cautions that it can also mean more playback buffering. If you are not responding to chat or taking live questions, the lowest-latency option may offer little practical benefit. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not have the low-latency optimization option and use normal latency. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for available choices.
Copyright and YouTube Live rules to check
Encoding settings determine how a signal is prepared and delivered; they do not grant rights to the video or music in it. Before broadcasting, confirm you have permission to use every recording, image, and audio track. A private or unlisted test is useful for checking the technical setup, but it does not establish that the content is cleared for a public stream. Review YouTube’s current live streaming tips and applicable copyright requirements for your situation.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Wrong stream URL or key, stream not selected in Live Control Room, or incompatible output settings | Confirm the selected live setup, re-enter its URL and key, and compare codec and output settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Stream health reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames | The connection or encoding system is not sustaining the configured output | Run a representative test, check actual outgoing bitrate and frame rate, and reduce the target resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if necessary. |
| Viewers report buffering | Playback conditions, stream stability, or a latency choice that is too aggressive for the situation | Check Live Control Room health, use a stable ingest, and consider a less aggressive latency setting if interaction does not require low delay. |
| Image quality is poor despite a high resolution setting | Bitrate may be too low for the selected codec, frame rate, or amount of motion; source quality may also be limited | Match the actual output to YouTube’s bitrate recommendation and inspect the source and encoder output, not only the resolution menu. |
| HDR signal fails or appears wrong | Unsupported codec or incorrect HDR bit depth/settings | Use H.265 for HDR, 10-bit output, and verify the rest of the encoder’s HDR chain; AV1 is not supported for HDR in YouTube’s guidance. |
