The general case is difficult to predict with a neat formula, and some arrangements are chaotic—but the problem is not literally unsolvable. The show’s fictional world also differs sharply from the real Alpha Centauri system, where three stars occupy a hierarchical arrangement rather than behaving like three nearby suns in constant turmoil.
What does “the three-body problem” mean?
It is the task of describing the motion of three bodies interacting through their mutual Newtonian gravitational attraction. As ANSTO scientist Dr. Pablo Galaviz puts it, “The title refers to the classical three-body problem, a fascinating intellectual puzzle relating to the motion of three celestial bodies under their mutual Newtonian gravitational attraction.”
With two bodies, the equations can be reduced, in a suitable coordinate system, to the motion of one particle in one dimension and solved in closed form. Add a third gravitating body and the general equations usually no longer yield a comparably simple analytic solution. The third body continually changes the gravitational forces acting on the other two, and those changes feed back into the motion.
That distinction is about the general case, not every possible arrangement. Euler’s collinear and Lagrange’s equilateral-triangle configurations are special exact solutions. Mathematician Karl F. Sundman also produced a convergent series solution, but it converges too slowly to be practical for most predictions. Numerical integration—calculating the motion forward in small steps for specified starting positions and velocities—has been central to practical work since the mid-20th century. In hierarchical arrangements, where two bodies form a close pair and a third remains much farther away, approximations can also be useful in parts of the parameter space.

Stone and Leigh’s analysis of non-hierarchical triples illustrates why the broad problem resists a simple deterministic rule: their work uses numerical integration and statistical treatment for a defined class of systems, rather than supplying one tidy formula for every possible starting arrangement. The NASA Technical Reports Server also records research describing global exponential instability in three-body configuration space. Neither result means that useful calculations are impossible; predictions depend on the particular system and the question being asked.
Why can three-body motion become chaotic?
Chaos means that, in some configurations, very small differences in starting conditions can grow into large differences in later trajectories. A tiny change in a body’s initial position or velocity may eventually alter which object escapes, whether two collide, or what remains bound. It does not mean that every three-body system behaves unpredictably: stable periodic solutions and stable hierarchical triples exist.

ANSTO’s explanation of chaotic configurations describes them as lasting only a handful of orbits before outcomes such as a body escaping or two bodies colliding. That is a characterization of the chaotic cases discussed there, not a universal lifetime for every triple. In the specific non-hierarchical Newtonian model studied by Stone and Leigh, bound triples generally disintegrate into an escaping star and a stable binary; that statistical finding applies to their model and assumptions, not to all three-star systems.
For a specified initial state, a numerical simulation can still provide a useful trajectory. The practical limit is that in a chaotic case, uncertainty in the starting measurements can eventually overwhelm confidence in a long-range prediction. That is different from being unable to calculate anything at all.

Is Alpha Centauri really a system of three nearby suns?
It has three stars, but not the fictional arrangement of three suns close together in erratic orbits. ANSTO describes Alpha Centauri as hierarchical: Alpha Centauri A and B form the closer binary, while Proxima Centauri—also called Alpha Centauri C—is much farther away.

The actual system is therefore a useful example of three stars arranged in a hierarchy, not evidence that three nearby suns must produce the show’s scenario. The reported distances and masses are ANSTO’s figures, published in 2024.

Could a planet survive orbiting three stars?
The question needs two qualifications. First, the show’s fictional planet adds another gravitating body: if its gravity is included, the situation is at least a four-body problem, not just the three-star problem. Second, “survive” can mean different things. A planet in a stable orbit around a close stellar pair, or far enough from a binary to orbit the pair together, is not the same as a planet being repeatedly thrown into extreme conditions by three stars on erratic paths.
Hierarchical arrangements can be stable; chaotic, non-hierarchical configurations can instead lead to ejection or collision in the models described above. Virginia Tech aerospace engineering professor Shane Ross told Newswise, “There are no known configurations of three massive stars that could maintain an erratic orbit.” Ross also argued that a planet in such an erratic setup would be even less likely to remain in orbit, reasoning that it would collide with a star or be ejected. These are Ross’s assessments of the fictional premise and known configurations, not proof that every imaginable arrangement involving three stars and a planet is impossible.

Ross also gave Newswise an estimate of about 10,000 years for the period of especially stable climate in Earth’s history. That is his reported claim, not a settled consensus statistic, and it should not be read as a general measure of how long planets can remain in stable orbits.
What the show gets right—and what it dramatizes
- Real physics: Three bodies interact through gravity, and the general motion is much harder to express analytically than the two-body case.
- Real uncertainty: Some configurations are chaotic, so tiny differences in initial conditions can produce divergent outcomes.
- Important qualification: Special exact solutions, stable periodic motion, hierarchical arrangements, numerical simulations, and statistical methods all exist.
- Fictional extrapolation: Alpha Centauri is not three nearby suns in erratic motion, and the planet’s repeated extreme eras are not a description of a known world in that system.
For readers who want the story behind the screen adaptation, the series is based on Liu Cixin’s trilogy, beginning with The Three-Body Problem. The mathematical name is real; the show’s particular planetary crisis is a science-fiction construction built around it.
