Alan Jackson has said he lives with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), an inherited nerve disorder that has affected his balance and mobility. He has not been reported as hospitalized in the sources reviewed here, so hospitalization cannot be credited with changing his career. His public statements and tour history instead show how CMT affected performing over time, as he continued to tour before bringing his road career to a planned close in 2026.
What health problem has Alan Jackson disclosed?
On September 28, 2021, Jackson publicly identified his condition as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, or CMT. He said he had been diagnosed about a decade earlier and described it as an inherited neuropathy. In his official announcement, he said the condition affected the nerves supplying his limbs.

Jackson described stumbling onstage, worsening balance—including difficulty balancing in front of a microphone—and discomfort standing to perform. He also referred to muscle weakness and pain. These are his account of how the condition affected him; they should not be treated as a complete description of CMT or as a prediction of how it affects other people.
Was Alan Jackson hospitalized?
The available reports cited here do not establish that Jackson was hospitalized. In October 2022, two concerts—one in Pittsburgh and one in Atlantic City—were postponed amid health issues related to CMT. The Los Angeles Times report describes postponed shows, not a hospital stay. It quoted Jackson saying he hoped to attend and that he hated to disappoint fans.

That distinction matters: a postponed concert is evidence of an effect on his schedule, but it does not confirm hospitalization or show that a hospital event prompted his decision to stop touring.
How did CMT affect his touring career?
Jackson did not announce an immediate retirement when he disclosed his diagnosis. In 2021, he said, “I’m not saying I won’t be able to tour. I’ll try to do as much as I can.” His subsequent announcements trace a gradual transition rather than a sudden career change attributed to one medical event.

Why did he end road touring?
Jackson’s public comments support a measured answer: CMT affected his ability to perform, and he ultimately ended road touring, but the sources do not establish that illness was the only reason. When announcing the 2024–2025 run, he said he was enjoying spending more time at home. In May 2025, he called the Milwaukee show his last road show and planned a Nashville finale.
The official announcement had scheduled that finale for June 27, 2026; the Associated Press later reported that the final full-length touring concert took place in Nashville that June. The record therefore supports a story of a progressive condition influencing performance and touring over several years—not a career ending because of a confirmed hospitalization.
