The monster dinosaur in the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer is the Distortus rex, commonly called the D-Rex. Official sources describe it as genetically manipulated or mutant, but they do not identify a specific mix of species in its ancestry. Calling it engineered is supported; naming a particular hybrid recipe is not.
What is the creature called?
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the film’s visual-effects studio, identifies the creature as the Distortus rex. “D-Rex” is the shortened name used for it.
Is the Distortus rex a hybrid?
The official descriptions establish that it is genetically manipulated: ILM groups it with the film’s genetically manipulated creatures, while Universal’s home-video announcement refers more broadly to mutant dinosaurs. Those terms support describing the D-Rex as engineered or mutant.
They do not, however, establish which species contributed its DNA. The official sources cited here do not give a precise genetic recipe, so claims that it combines particular dinosaurs or other creatures remain unconfirmed rather than canon.

How does the D-Rex fit into the film?
Jurassic World Rebirth takes place five years after Jurassic World Dominion. The official synopsis describes surviving dinosaurs concentrated in isolated equatorial environments and an extraction team sent to an island research facility connected to the original Jurassic Park. The team’s mission concerns genetic material from three especially colossal creatures; the D-Rex is part of the film’s broader roster of engineered creatures.
The film’s first official trailer was posted on February 5, 2025, according to the Universal Pictures trailer page. The synopsis and setting are also described by NBCUniversal and Amblin.

What is confirmed—and what is not?
- Confirmed: The trailer’s monster is the Distortus rex, or D-Rex.
- Confirmed: ILM describes it as genetically manipulated, and Universal uses mutant-dinosaur language for the film’s creatures.
- Not specified in the official sources cited here: The exact species or genetic combination behind the D-Rex.
That distinction matters: “mutant” or “engineered” describes the creature’s fictional status, but it does not reveal a particular hybrid ancestry.
How the creature was brought to the screen
ILM reports roughly 1,200 visual-effects shots for its work on the film. It also says that, in more than 300 ocean shots, about 85% were filmed on dry land. These are the studio’s production figures, not counts specific to the D-Rex or an independent audit of the effects work.
