What Is the “Let Them” Theory? Mel Robbins’ Viral Self-Help Motto, Explained

The Let Them Theory pairs allowing other people their choices with taking responsibility for your own response—with important limits around safety and boundaries.

The “Let Them” Theory is a self-help prompt popularized by Mel Robbins: let other people make their own choices, then focus on what you can choose to do next. Its companion phrase, “Let Me,” is the part that turns acceptance into action. It is not a rule to tolerate danger, discrimination, or repeated boundary violations.

What does the “Let Them” Theory mean?

The framework has two steps. “Let Them” means recognizing that other people control their own choices; “Let Me” asks what you will do, say, or think in response. The Australian Psychological Society’s CEO, Dr Zena Burgess, describes it as a reminder that “you can only control how you react to a situation, not the situation itself.”

For example, if a friend does not call or you learn you were not invited to an event, the first step is to resist trying to force the other person to behave differently. The second is to decide how you want to respond: you might contact them, adjust your expectations, or put your attention elsewhere. The point is not that the other person’s choice is always fair or harmless; it is that managing their choice is different from choosing your own next move.

How to use the two steps

1. Notice the urge to manage someone else

Robbins presents the motto for moments when you are becoming worked up because someone is acting differently than you expected. Pause long enough to identify what is actually within your control: your words, boundaries, decisions, and attention—not another person’s preferences.

2. “Let Them” make an ordinary choice

Allow room for people to decide what they want, even if you would choose differently. This can help interrupt rumination about why someone did not call, why you were left out, or why another person made a different plan.

3. Ask, “What can I do next?”

Use “Let Me” to move from watching their behavior to considering your own response. You can ask for what you need, explain how something affected you, choose not to participate, or decide what boundary to set. As Robbins’s book is quoted by the Australian Psychological Society: “The source of your power is not in managing other people, it’s in your response.”

When should you not “let them”?

Robbins explicitly warns against treating the phrase as a reason to stand by when action is dangerous or when your rights and boundaries are at stake. The framework is about releasing control over ordinary choices, not accepting harm or silence.

  • Immediate danger: Do not stand back if someone is about to drive after drinking or otherwise endanger people. Take appropriate steps to protect safety.
  • Your rights or fair treatment: “Let Them” does not mean giving up asking for what you need or advocating for your rights, including when discrimination is involved.
  • Repeated boundary violations: You do not have to permit a pattern of someone crossing your boundaries. “Let Me” can mean stating a limit and deciding what you will do if it is ignored.

Where did the idea come from?

Robbins has described the personal origin of her version as a family moment: while micromanaging her son’s prom plans, she says her daughter Kendall told her to let the young people choose what they wanted. Robbins has also connected the idea to older traditions and approaches, including Buddhism, Stoicism, the Serenity Prayer, detachment, and radical acceptance. In a 2025 Guardian interview response, she said the idea felt familiar because it drew on those broader roots.

That personal account is distinct from the dispute over the phrase’s earlier circulation. The Atlantic reported in April 2026 that poet Cassie B. Phillips had posted a “Let Them” poem or mantra online in 2022 and that it spread widely. According to the Atlantic, Phillips contacted Robbins after seeing her post; Robbins’s representative said Robbins and her team had not seen Phillips’s poem, while Phillips questioned Robbins’s origin story. The Washington Post also covered criticism over whether Phillips should have been credited. The available reporting establishes a contested attribution debate, not proof that Robbins copied Phillips’s poem.

A careful distinction is useful: Robbins popularized and developed the motto into The Let Them Theory, co-authored with Sawyer Robbins, while “let them” formulations existed earlier. The phrase’s brief wording and the branded framework are not the same claim about authorship.

Is the “Let Them” Theory backed by psychology?

The underlying reminder—to focus on your own response rather than trying to control another person—is presented by Dr Burgess of the Australian Psychological Society as a way to support mental peace and wellbeing. Psychology Today contributor Marilyn Wedge has described the approach as potentially helpful for releasing painful feelings, while noting that letting go can take discipline, practice, and mindfulness.

That commentary is not evidence from a controlled trial or systematic review. The sources cited here do not establish Robbins’s branded framework as a validated clinical treatment. It is most accurately described as a self-help mindset or prompt, not a diagnosis, therapy, or proven treatment. Book sales, bestseller status, social-media views, and testimonials do not demonstrate clinical effectiveness.

What is the book, and how did the motto go viral?

The Let Them Theory is a book by Mel Robbins and Sawyer Robbins that expands the two-part motto into a broader self-help framework. Robbins’s podcast described the Instagram post as receiving more than 14 million views shortly after it was posted; that was her contemporaneous account, not a verified current view count. The book’s sales milestones have also been reported at different times: the Atlantic reported more than nine million copies sold in April 2026, while Robbins’s official page later claimed “10+ Million Copies Sold.” These are commercial figures, not measures of whether the approach works psychologically.

Robbins’s official book page lists retailers including Amazon, Audible, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Target, and Bookshop: The Let Them Theory book page.
