For YouTube Live, set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. At 30 frames per second (fps), two seconds equals 60 frames.
What a keyframe interval means
A keyframe is a complete video frame from which a decoder can reconstruct subsequent frames. The keyframe interval is the time or number of frames between those complete frames. For YouTube Live, the target is an interval of two seconds, not two frames.
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend a two-second keyframe frequency and set four seconds as the maximum. The matching YouTube live-stream error guidance says to change the stream so keyframes are sent every two seconds.
Set the interval in OBS
- Open OBS settings: Select Settings, then Output.
- Choose the output mode: If needed, change Output Mode to Advanced so the streaming encoder controls are visible.
- Find the streaming keyframe setting: In the Streaming section, locate Keyframe Interval or the equivalent field for your selected encoder. Set it to 2 seconds. OBS labels and available fields can vary by version and encoder; the path Settings > Output > Output Mode > Advanced > Streaming is documented in an Amazon IVS setup guide, not as universal YouTube-specific UI documentation.
- Check what the field measures: In OBS’s Advanced Output field, the interval is described in seconds. If you are instead entering a custom frame-count parameter, multiply your frame rate by two. At 30 fps, use 60 frames; at 60 fps, use 120 frames.
- Confirm the outgoing stream: Run a test and check YouTube Studio’s stream health. If YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe frequency, verify the actual encoder output rather than relying only on the value shown in OBS.
The seconds-versus-frames distinction is also discussed in an OBS Project forum thread opened in 2015. Treat that forum discussion as explanatory, not as current documentation for every OBS version or encoder.

How the interval relates to frame rate
When the setting is expressed in seconds, keep it at two seconds even if you change frame rate. When a codec or custom encoder parameter asks for a frame count, calculate the equivalent count as fps × 2.

YouTube explicitly gives the 30 fps and 60-frame conversion in its live-stream error guidance. The 60 fps conversion follows the same calculation. Do not enter a frame count into a field that expects seconds, or vice versa.

Other YouTube encoder settings to check
Keyframe interval is one part of the encoder configuration. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are YouTube’s listed settings, not a guarantee that every codec is available in every OBS encoder or on every computer.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends.
- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where your setup supports it.
- Video codec and frame rate: Choose options supported by your encoder and compatible with YouTube’s published guidance.
- Test before an important stream: YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real event, monitoring stream health, and selecting a quality your upload connection can sustain.
Troubleshoot a keyframe-frequency warning
OBS shows 2, but YouTube still reports a problem
Check whether the field is set in seconds or frames and whether the selected encoder is actually sending the intended configuration. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes, so a persistent warning may reflect the stream received by YouTube rather than only the visible OBS setting.

The field is set to 60
That may be correct if the control expects frames and your stream is 30 fps. If it expects seconds, 60 is not the two-second target. Check the field’s units and calculate from the active frame rate.
The warning appears after changing frame rate or encoder
Recheck the keyframe interval after changing output settings. For a frame-count control, recalculate using the new fps; for a seconds-based control, retain two seconds. If the warning continues, inspect the outgoing stream and YouTube stream-health details for possible ingestion or GOP-size issues.
