The Jon Hamm dancing meme comes from Apple TV+’s Your Friends & Neighbors, not a music video or a dance challenge. In the scene, Hamm’s character, Andrew “Coop” Cooper, dances at a club after being punched by his friend Nick. Online edits pair the moment with “Turn the Lights Off” by Kato and Jon Nørgaard, turning a bruised, troubled night into a reaction for joy, relief, nostalgia or coping with a bad situation.
Where is the Jon Hamm dancing clip from?
The footage is from season one, episode eight of Your Friends & Neighbors, titled “When Did We Become These People?” Hamm plays Coop, a disgraced hedge fund manager whose life takes a turn after losing his job and divorcing. The series is a dark comedy about his subsequent thefts from wealthy neighbors, as the Associated Press describes in its coverage of the show.
In the episode’s club scene, Coop is out with friends after Nick punches him and Barney invites the men to go out. The bruising visible in the meme is part of that story, rather than makeup added for a dance performance. Know Your Meme identifies the episode and the scene in its history of the Jon Hamm dancing meme.
Why does the meme feel so different from the scene?
The show gives the dance a specific, messy context: Coop has just been hit, and his friends take him clubbing. Meme edits detach that moment from the plot and use the contrast between his bruised appearance and uninhibited dancing for a different emotional effect. A caption may frame the dance as a reaction to getting what you wanted, enjoying a small pleasure, remembering a happy time or finding a way to cope when things go wrong.

One early Russian-language format, translated as “What else do you want?”, set up a contrast between worrying when life is going well and dancing when it is going badly. Later edits often introduce a happy memory or a small delight before cutting to Hamm. Some creators imitate the head movement before the transition; others replace Coop or animate the format. T3 also notes that some edits use a poppier club track instead of the best-known song pairing; its explanation of the meme discusses that variation.
Why is Jon Hamm dancing to “Turn the Lights Off”?
“Turn the Lights Off” is a song by Kato and Jon Nørgaard that became the most recognizable music pairing for the clip. The edit’s upbeat club sound makes Coop’s dance work as a punchline, celebration or release, even when the caption describes a frustrating or bleak situation. The song is part of the meme edit; the scene’s original story context is the club outing after Coop is punched.
The association also drew attention to the track. Know Your Meme reported that “Turn the Lights Off” reached number one on Spotify’s Viral 50 in mid-December 2025. That is a historical chart claim about the song at that time, not a statement of its current ranking.
How did the meme spread?
Apple TV had promoted Your Friends & Neighbors before the meme caught on: Know Your Meme records an Apple social-media ad featuring the scene on March 18, 2025. It identifies a TikTok post by @guantannaa dated October 11, 2025, as one of the earliest known examples, not a confirmed first post. Russian-language TikTok uses followed during October; the format reached English-language social media in November and December, according to the same timeline.
