The Hill is a U.S. digital news publication focused on politics and public policy, especially developments in Washington. Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, acquired it in 2021. The audience figures publicly cited by Nexstar are historical measures from 2020 and 2023—not estimates of its audience today.
What is The Hill?
The Hill is a political news and policy publication that reports on U.S. government, elections and public affairs. Its coverage has a strong Washington focus, making it a source for reporting on Congress, the administration and political developments that affect national policy. It is a digital media platform rather than a documentary or a film title.
At the time of its 2021 acquisition announcement, Nexstar described The Hill as having more than 100 journalists covering political news and events. That is a dated figure reported by the company, not a current newsroom headcount. Nexstar’s 2021 acquisition announcement also characterized it as a leading political news platform; that wording reflects the buyer’s description, not an independent ranking.
Who owns The Hill?
Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, announced that it acquired The Hill on August 20, 2021, for $130 million plus working capital adjustments. Nexstar presented the acquisition as part of its content strategy and described The Hill as complementary to NewsNation, its national cable news network.

Nexstar executives also used terms such as “trusted,” “unbiased” and “balanced” when describing the publication. Those are the company’s positioning statements; they should not be treated as independently verified measures of political balance or editorial quality.
Is The Hill a newspaper or a website?
It is best understood as a digital news publication and media platform, not a traditional print newspaper. Nexstar’s acquisition announcement described it as a political digital media platform. Its reporting and other digital products are published online; the available evidence does not establish a current print edition.

How does The Hill make money?
Nexstar said in 2021 that The Hill’s business was primarily advertising-supported, with revenue from direct advertising, programmatic advertising and licensing. This is the company’s description at the time of the acquisition, not a current audited breakdown of revenue.
In a 2023 announcement, a Nexstar executive also identified partnerships, sponsors, product experiences, live events and video as potential areas for growth. That statement describes areas the company said could contribute to growth; it does not confirm specific current sponsorship inventory or partner availability.

Nexstar cited two different Comscore snapshots. They use different metrics and periods, so they should not be read as a direct before-and-after comparison or as a current audience estimate.
| Period | Reported measure | Attribution and context |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 48 million average monthly users; 2.2 billion total pageviews | Comscore figures reported by Nexstar in its August 2021 acquisition announcement. Users and pageviews are distinct measures. |
| October 2023 | More than 35.5 million unique monthly visitors; 80 million total visits | Comscore figures reported by Nexstar on December 5, 2023. The announcement also said unique monthly visitors were up 33% year over year. |
Nexstar’s December 2023 audience announcement linked that month’s growth in part to coverage of the House Speaker race and election coverage with Decision Desk HQ. It said the partnership would expand in 2024 with interactive features and polling averages, including a co-branded polling average. The announcement documents those plans at that time, not which features remain available now.
