The “fire bird Pokémon” usually refers to Moltres, the legendary Fire/Flying Pokémon numbered 146 in the Pokédex. But “fire bird” is an informal description, not an exclusive official name: Ho-Oh is another Fire/Flying Pokémon that could fit a vague clue.
Why Moltres is the likely answer
The official Pokémon Pokédex identifies Moltres as one of the legendary bird Pokémon. Its standard form is the Flame Pokémon, with Fire/Flying typing, and it is listed as No. 0146. The Pokédex says, “Its appearance is said to indicate the coming of spring.” These are fictional-world descriptions, not claims about a real animal. The Pokémon Pokédex entry for Moltres gives its form details.
Moltres, Ho-Oh, and Galarian Moltres: what’s the difference?
| Pokémon or form | Pokédex number | Typing | Clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moltres (standard form) | No. 146 | Fire/Flying | The legendary bird most commonly meant by “fire bird.” |
| Galarian Moltres | No. 146, Galarian Form | Dark/Flying | A regional form with a fire-like aura, not a Fire type. |
| Ho-Oh | No. 250 | Fire/Flying | A separate Pokémon that may fit a broad clue about a colorful fire-associated bird. |
The official Pokédex index distinguishes Moltres at No. 146 from Ho-Oh at No. 250. Check the official Pokédex index if a clue gives a number rather than a name.
Is Galarian Moltres a Fire type?
No. The official listing gives Galarian Moltres Dark/Flying typing. Its fire-like look comes from a special Dark-type move described as turning its wrath into a flame-like aura; appearance does not change its listed type. The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield page for Galarian Moltres describes that move.

How to identify the answer from a clue
- If the clue says “legendary bird” or gives Pokédex No. 146, it points to Moltres.
- If it specifies a dark regional form or a flame-like aura, it means Galarian Moltres, which is Dark/Flying.
- If it gives No. 250, it means Ho-Oh, a different Fire/Flying Pokémon.
- If it only says “fire bird,” treat Moltres as the likely answer rather than an exclusive definition; fans also use descriptive phrases informally for other Pokémon.
Community discussions show that players sometimes use descriptive wording such as “fire bird” informally, rather than as an official species name: a discussion about the Skeledirge chick and a discussion of descriptive Pokémon names.
