Ravi Paar is an animated short based on Gulzar’s story of the same name. It follows a couple amid the horrors of India’s 1947 Partition. Presented by the Kahani Project, the film was designed around stories from the anthology The Other in the Mirror, which brings together writing from both sides of the India–Pakistan border. Scroll’s August 14, 2022 feature identifies the film and its creative team.
What is Ravi Paar about?
The short adapts Gulzar’s Partition story, centering on a couple’s experience during the 1947 Partition of India. Scroll describes the film as capturing the horrors of that period, but its feature does not provide a fuller plot synopsis. The title should therefore be understood as a brief description of the subject, not a scene-by-scene account of the story.
The film uses hand-painted images to offer what Scroll calls poignant glimpses of history. Its subject is the human experience of Partition rather than a documented account of events or a statistical overview.
Who made the animated film?
Pakistani director and animator Shakir Khan led the film team, and filmmaker and poet Ammar Aziz served as executive producer, according to Scroll. The Kahani Project presented the short.

Which book inspired Ravi Paar?
The film was designed around stories in The Other in the Mirror, an anthology of writing by authors from both sides of the India–Pakistan border. Sehyr Mirza edited the book. Scroll reports that it was published by Yoda Press in India and Folio Books in Pakistan.
Scroll describes the anthology’s stories as “stories that bring warmth to our barren inner lands that have remained frozen since partition”. The phrase appears in the article as a description of the book’s contents, not as a quotation attributed to a named speaker.

Why was the project made collaboratively?
Scroll says the project aimed to bridge the gap between young people in India and Pakistan through art. Its 2022 feature also reported a plan for subsequent short films inspired by other stories in the anthology, made jointly by artists from both countries. That report establishes the project’s stated plan at the time; it does not confirm which later films, if any, were completed.
