The Stranger’s helmet and specialized gauntlet are made from it, giving him a way to disrupt a Jedi’s weapon—but cortosis is brittle in its purest state, unlike the stronger lightsaber-deflecting beskar.
What is the metal that shorts out lightsabers in The Acolyte?
It is cortosis, a rare fictional ore. StarWars.com describes it as having energy-disrupting properties: contact can short out a Jedi lightsaber for a brief period. The effect is temporary; the official description does not give a specific duration or say that the blade is permanently disabled. StarWars.com’s Cortosis Databank entry summarizes the material’s lore.
Where does cortosis appear in The Acolyte?
The Stranger uses cortosis in his helmet and a specialized gauntlet. The metal’s live-action debut came in episode five, “Night,” where its lightsaber-disrupting property becomes part of his fight against the Jedi. StarWars.com’s feature on cortosis and The Acolyte identifies both the episode and the items.
How does cortosis compare with beskar?
They are different fictional materials with different advantages. Cortosis is distinctive for disrupting energy and briefly shorting lightsabers; beskar is described as strong enough to deflect a lightsaber blade. Cortosis is not simply a tougher version of beskar.
