Relay is an ambiguous name, not one single current product. Relay.dev is an open-source GraphQL client and framework for React; Relay.app is a work-focused AI workflow and agent-automation platform; and an electrical relay is an input-controlled switch. Other businesses also use Relay for support, operations, payments, caching, and tunnels.

The qualifier matters because each meaning serves a different audience and requires different advice. A React developer needs Relay.dev documentation, a business user needs Relay.app workflow and pricing information, and an electronics buyer needs electrical specifications rather than software features.

Key takeaways

  • Relay is an ambiguous name that can refer to Relay.dev, Relay.app, an electrical relay, or several unrelated Relay-branded products.
  • Relay.dev is an open-source GraphQL client and framework for React that combines colocated data requirements, compiler-generated artifacts, and normalized client state.
  • Relay.app is a work-focused workflow automation platform that combines AI actions, agentic tool use, and human review.
  • An electrical relay is an input-controlled switching device that changes one or more output circuits when specified input conditions are met.
  • A 12V relay module is relevant only to the electrical meaning of Relay; its voltage, contact rating, contact arrangement, isolation, and load compatibility must all be checked before purchase.

Which Relay do you mean?

The correct meaning of Relay depends on whether the surrounding context is React development, AI workflow automation, electrical engineering, customer support, or operations management. The bare name does not identify one product or company.

Meaning Typical reader What it does How to identify it
Relay.dev React and GraphQL developer Manages data fetching, caching, mutations, pagination, and rendering-related data state in React applications. The discussion includes React components, GraphQL schemas, fragments, a compiler, or generated TypeScript types.
Relay.app Solopreneur, freelancer, small business, or operations team Builds work automations that can use AI, approved tools, branching logic, and human approvals. The discussion includes workflows, AI agents, integrations, steps, credits, or human-in-the-loop review.
Electrical relay Electrical, automotive, industrial-control, or electronics user Uses an input signal to switch another circuit or load. The discussion includes coil voltage, contacts, poles, current, AC or DC, terminals, or a relay module.
Other Relay-branded software Support or operations teams Provides customer-service, field-service, issue-routing, or resolution-management functions. The discussion names a specific company or refers to support inboxes, knowledge bases, tickets, or issue ownership.

Use the qualifier in a search or technical conversation: Relay.dev, Relay.app, or electrical relay. That single distinction prevents the most common mistake: treating a React data framework, an AI automation service, and a circuit component as versions of the same product.

What is Relay in React?

Relay in React usually means Relay.dev, an open-source GraphQL client and framework designed for React applications. Relay places data requirements beside the components that use the data, then uses a compiler and runtime to coordinate fetching, generated artifacts, normalized state, mutations, and rendering behavior. The official GraphQL and Relay tutorial explains the component-level data-colocation model.

Relay is therefore more than a function that sends a GraphQL request. Relay is an opinionated data layer for applications whose UI is built from a changing graph of related data. Meta describes Relay as a framework for declarative data fetching in React applications in its engineering overview of Relay.

How does Relay.dev work?

Relay.dev works by letting React components declare the data they need while Relay’s compiler prepares the corresponding GraphQL artifacts and the runtime manages the resulting data in a normalized store.

  1. Components declare requirements. A component describes the fields or graph data needed to render its UI instead of forcing a distant parent component to know every descendant’s data needs.
  2. The compiler prepares artifacts. Relay processes the application’s GraphQL operations ahead of runtime and generates the artifacts needed by the application and its type-checking workflow.
  3. The runtime fetches and stores graph data. Relay coordinates network requests and keeps records in a normalized client store, so the same graph node can remain consistent when multiple components or screens use it.
  4. UI and data updates stay coordinated. Relay supports loading states, refetching, pagination, prefetching, optimistic updates, rollback handling, and streaming or deferred data according to the official feature documentation.

The practical result is colocated data ownership with centralized consistency. A component can state what it needs, while the Relay compiler and runtime handle much of the work required to combine those needs, fetch data, update the store, and reflect changes in the interface.

What are Relay.dev’s main advantages?

Relay.dev is strongest when a React application has a substantial GraphQL schema, many screens sharing related entities, and a team that benefits from consistent conventions.

  • Colocation: Data requirements live close to the components that consume them.
  • Normalized consistency: A shared graph node can be represented consistently across components and screens.
  • Compiler assistance: GraphQL artifacts and type-safe generated TypeScript types reduce the amount of repetitive client-side data plumbing.
  • Advanced loading behavior: Prefetching, pagination, refetching, loading states, streaming, and deferred data are part of Relay’s documented feature set.
  • Mutation support: Optimistic updates and rollback handling help applications show responsive changes while retaining a recovery path if a mutation fails.

Relay.dev is not a general-purpose replacement for React, and Relay.dev is not a GraphQL server. Relay.dev is a client-side framework that sits in a React application and expects a compatible GraphQL API and schema.

What are the trade-offs of Relay.dev?

The main trade-off is adoption complexity: Relay.dev asks a team to adopt its compiler, generated artifacts, schema and type workflow, and normalized store rather than treating GraphQL as a thin request layer.

A simpler GraphQL client may be easier for a small application with a few queries and limited shared state. Relay.dev becomes more attractive when the application needs strong conventions around component data requirements, cache consistency, pagination, prefetching, optimistic mutations, or generated types. The choice is architectural, not a claim that Relay.dev is universally better than every other GraphQL client.

How does Relay.app’s AI workflow automation work?

Relay.app’s AI workflow automation works through three broad kinds of AI action: built-in AI operations, prompts that request flexible structured output, and agentic tool use in which an agent chooses among permitted actions.

AI capability What it is suited to do Control level
Built-in AI actions Extraction, summarization, translation, transcription, and other defined tasks. The workflow uses a predefined action for a known type of operation.
Prompts to models Produce flexible or structured output from instructions and workflow data. The author defines the prompt and expected result, while the model supplies the response.
Agentic tool use Let an agent decide which permitted actions to perform as it works toward a task. The agent has decision-making latitude within the tools and permissions provided by the workflow.
Human-in-the-loop tools Pause for a person to review an AI result before the workflow continues. A human approval or review step adds a control point before consequential work proceeds.

Human review is the important distinction for workflows where a generated answer should not automatically become a customer message, database change, approval, or external action. Relay.app’s AI Step documentation describes the available AI action patterns and human-in-the-loop approach.

Who is Relay.app for?

Relay.app is aimed at people who need work automation that can interpret information rather than merely move a value from one application to another. A small business might use it to extract structured information from incoming material, ask an AI step to summarize or classify that information, request human approval, and then continue with an approved action.

Relay.app’s documented audience includes solopreneurs, freelancers, small businesses, and teams inside larger public companies. Relay.app is a better conceptual fit when a workflow needs AI interpretation, structured output, agent-selected actions, or approval checkpoints. A basic trigger-and-action automation may not need that additional layer.

How much does Relay.app cost?

According to Relay.app’s official pricing page, accessed August 14, 2026, the displayed plans are Free at $0, Professional at $19 per month when billed annually, Team at $59 per month when billed annually, and Enterprise at custom pricing. The same page displays different monthly AI-credit and step allowances for the plans.

What is an electrical relay?

An electrical relay is an input-controlled switching device: an input condition causes a predicted change in one or more electrical output circuits. OMRON defines a relay as a device designed to cause a sudden, predicted change in a single or multiple electrical output circuits when certain conditions are satisfied by the electrical input circuit that controls the relay device in its technical explanation of general-purpose relays.

In an electromechanical relay, the input commonly energizes a coil that moves contacts. The contacts can open, close, or change between circuits. A relay allows a control signal to operate a separate circuit under the relay’s rated electrical conditions, and the design may provide isolation, different voltage or current handling, multiple contacts, or control of a load that the original signal should not switch directly.

How does an electrical relay work?

An electrical relay works by translating an input signal into a change at its output contacts or switching element.

  1. Input: A control circuit supplies the relay’s specified input, such as a coil voltage for an electromechanical device or an electrical control signal for a solid-state device.
  2. Switching action: An electromechanical relay moves physical contacts; a solid-state relay changes the state of semiconductor switching circuitry without moving contacts.
  3. Output: The changed contact state connects, disconnects, or transfers the controlled load circuit according to the relay’s contact arrangement and rating.

A relay is not automatically safe or compatible because its label contains the right nominal voltage. Coil or input voltage, AC or DC operation, contact arrangement, number of poles, maximum switching voltage and current, inrush current, load type, isolation, terminals, mounting format, and the intended application all matter.

What is the difference between electromechanical and solid-state relays?

Electromechanical relays switch with moving contacts, while solid-state relays switch electronically without moving contacts.

Criterion Electromechanical relay Solid-state relay
Switching mechanism Physical contacts moved by an electromechanical mechanism. Semiconductor switching with no moving contacts.
Contact bounce Moving contacts can produce contact bounce that must suit the application. No mechanical contact bounce.
Sound May produce an audible click during switching. Quiet operation because there are no moving contacts.
Switching speed Limited by the mechanical movement of the contacts. High-speed switching is a stated advantage of solid-state designs.
Wear mechanism Contacts can wear or arc, depending on the load and switching conditions. No contact wear or contact arcing from moving contacts, although the semiconductor still has application limits.
Typical reason to choose General-purpose switching, familiar contact arrangements, and applications suited to physical contacts. Frequent switching, silent operation, digital-logic compatibility, or harsh environments where the solid-state characteristics are beneficial.

OMRON’s solid-state relay selection guide identifies no moving contacts, no contact bounce, quiet operation, high-speed switching, digital-logic compatibility, and long life as relevant solid-state characteristics. OMRON’s electromechanical relay catalog covers general-purpose, I/O, power, latching, ratchet, miniature, plug-in, slim, and multi-pole relay families.

What should you check before buying a 12V relay module?

A 12V relay module should be selected by its complete electrical specification, not by the 12V label alone. The phrase is relevant to the electrical meaning of Relay and has no connection to Relay.app or Relay.dev.

  • Input or coil voltage: Confirm that the module’s required control voltage matches the available source and that the input uses AC or DC as intended.
  • Contact rating: Check the maximum switching voltage and current for the actual load, not only the control-side voltage.
  • Load type: Motors, solenoids, lamps, heaters, power supplies, and other loads can impose different switching and inrush conditions.
  • Contact arrangement: Confirm whether the circuit needs normally open, normally closed, changeover, or another arrangement.
  • Poles and channels: Verify the number of independently switched circuits and the number of poles.
  • Isolation and terminals: Check the stated isolation, terminal layout, socket or mounting format, and enclosure compatibility.
  • Controller compatibility: Match the module to the intended microcontroller, PLC, automotive circuit, appliance, or other control system.

The research supports the generic product category but does not verify a particular marketplace listing, current price, stock position, or affiliate terms. A specific relay should not be recommended without matching the control circuit and load requirements.

How do you install Relay?

There is no single installation procedure for Relay because Relay may be a React framework, a hosted workflow product, or a physical electrical component.

  • Installing Relay.dev: Start with the official Relay documentation and identify the required React, GraphQL schema, compiler, generated-artifact, and type workflow for the project. Do not use instructions for Relay.app or an electrical relay.
  • Using Relay.app: Treat Relay.app as a work automation service whose setup involves creating workflows, configuring actions and permitted tools, and adding review points where needed. Its documentation and current plan page should be checked for the current onboarding and availability details.
  • Installing an electrical relay: Treat installation as circuit integration rather than software installation. Confirm the control voltage, load voltage and current, AC or DC requirements, contact arrangement, terminals, isolation, and mounting format before connecting anything.

Which Relay should you choose?

Choose the qualified Relay meaning that matches the problem you are solving, not the product name alone.

Your task Relevant Relay Why
