Questlove’s The Idea in You is a picture book about finding inspiration and turning an idea into a creative pursuit. Illustrated by Sean Qualls, it invites children to look for ideas around them and imagine how those ideas might grow. Abrams Books for Young Readers published the book on September 24, 2024, so it is a 2024 release—not a new 2026 title.
What is The Idea in You about?
The book follows a child finding inspiration and offers suggestions for coming up with and developing an idea. Its central message is that creative starting points can come from unexpected places. The publisher’s description quotes the book: “An idea can come from anywhere. Start here: reach up into the sky / And unhook a star.”
Rather than focusing on one specific art form, the book encourages children to explore creative interests and give their ideas room to develop. Questlove and illustrator Sean Qualls discussed their collaboration and encouraging young people to pursue creative lives in a September 2024 Publishers Weekly interview.
Who made the book?
The Idea in You: A Picture Book is Questlove’s debut picture book, with illustrations by Sean Qualls. Questlove is the author; Qualls’s mixed-media artwork combines acrylic paint, paper, collage, and pencil, according to Kirkus Reviews.

What age is the book for?
The age guidance differs by source. Abrams lists ages 4–8, while Kirkus identifies a picture-book audience of 6–9. Kirkus also notes that some of the abstract instructions and images may go over younger readers’ heads. These are the publisher’s and reviewer’s assessments, not a definitive developmental rating.

Read it aloud, then invite children to sketch an idea they would like to explore. They might draw something they noticed that day, invent a character, or imagine what could happen if an ordinary object were used in a new way. There is no need to judge the result or turn it into a finished project; the point is to help children notice and develop their own starting ideas.
Rank #2
Crayola’s 2026 teacher’s guide connects the book with classroom discussion about embracing ideas and finding one’s voice, while its student thinking sheet suggests sketching and using art materials. These activities can be adapted with whatever drawing supplies are available.
