Critics treat it as a set of tendencies rather than a rulebook, and they still disagree about when it began and how sharply it breaks from modernism.
Why the term is contested
The word “postmodern” was applied to architecture, philosophy, and culture before it became a standard label for literature, and each field uses it differently. Literary reference works such as the Oxford Bibliographies entry on postmodernism discuss the term alongside metafiction, metanarrative, and intertextuality, while stressing that scholars disagree about its implications and about where the movement is heading. The safest reading of the label is therefore descriptive: a critic who calls a novel postmodern is pointing to a family of traits, not certifying it against a fixed test.
Recognizable features to look for
When you read a text and want to decide whether the postmodern label helps, these questions are more useful than a checklist of “postmodern techniques”:
- Does the text show its own machinery? A narrator may comment on the act of writing, admit that the story is being arranged, or break the illusion that the reader is watching events directly.
- Does it visibly rely on other texts? Quotation, allusion, and reworking of older books, myths, or genre conventions are common.
- Does it treat genre as material? Parody and pastiche can make the conventions of a detective story, romance, or historical novel the actual subject rather than a neutral container.
- Does it mix registers? Postmodern writing is often described as blurring the line between serious literary allusion and popular or commercial culture.
- Does it question authority over the past? Some fiction asks how a version of history becomes accepted, who gets to narrate it, and what is lost in the telling.
A single work may show none of these, several, or all of them in different proportions. Their presence signals a postmodern reading is plausible; their absence does not rule it out.

Key terms in plain language
Metafiction
Metafiction is fiction that draws attention to its own status as something made or narrated. Standard accounts place it within discussions of postmodern fiction and of historiographic metafiction, a closely related mode.
Intertextuality
Intertextuality describes how a text’s meaning depends on its relation to other texts, whether through quotation, allusion, borrowing, or reworking. Both Oxford Bibliographies and Routledge’s scholarly coverage of postmodernism treat it as central.

Parody and pastiche
Parody imitates a style or form in order to comment on it, often critically or playfully. Pastiche reuses styles without the same pointed commentary. The University of Toronto Scarborough English department’s literary glossary lists both among the tendencies identified in literary postmodernism, and Linda Hutcheon’s influential study connects parody to postmodern theory.
Historiographic metafiction
This term, associated with Linda Hutcheon, names fiction that engages with the writing of history while exposing how historical narratives are constructed. It is one of the most useful bridges between postmodern literature and questions about evidence and representation.

Metanarrative and grand narrative
A metanarrative, or grand narrative, is a broad story that claims to explain history, knowledge, or social change as a whole. Postmodern skepticism is often defined against such stories.
Lyotard and the “incredulity” definition
The most quoted formulation comes from the philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s entry on postmodernism quotes his definition: “I define postmodern as incredulity toward meta-narratives.” The encyclopedia places the formulation in Lyotard’s The Postmodern Condition, first published in 1979 and translated into English in 1984.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The phrase is useful context, but it is philosophy rather than a complete account of literary style. Many novels and poems labeled postmodern do not dramatize any particular grand narrative, and many critics who accept Lyotard’s diagnosis do not describe literature in his terms. Treat the quotation as one lens on the cultural mood behind the label.

Postmodernism is usually discussed as following, revising, or reacting against modernism. The comparison works best on three axes, and each row below describes common tendencies in summaries of the two movements, not rules that every writer obeyed.

| Axis | Commonly described modernist tendency | Commonly described postmodern tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Form and authority | Formal control and a search for coherence are often cited as the contrast point. | Play, contingency, self-commentary, parody, and open borrowing are emphasized. |
| Cultural registers | High culture is often treated as kept distinct from popular culture. | The boundary between high and low allusion is often described as blurred. |
| Historical relation | Treated as the movement postmodernism follows, revises, or reacts against. | Critics disagree whether postmodernism breaks from, radicalizes, or succeeds modernism, so no single chronology is settled. |
Where the movement starts, and why that is disputed
There is no agreed start date. Accounts range across different decades and historical moments, and some scholarly histories focus specifically on the prefix “post” itself, asking what the word claims about a break from what came before. A 2010s-era academic history catalogued at Utrecht University, titled The ‘post’ in literary postmodernism: A history, is one example of work devoted to this question. Readers should therefore be cautious about any article that gives a precise founding year as settled fact.
How the label works in practice
The categories are most useful when you use them to read a specific passage. Consider four illustrative situations:
- A narrator pauses to discuss the difficulty of choosing words, drawing the reader into the process of composition.
- A novel rebuilds an older story from a different character’s point of view, making the reader notice what the original left out.
- A detective story turns its own conventions into the puzzle, so the genre’s expectations become part of the plot.
- A historical novel shows several conflicting accounts of one event and asks how any of them became the official version.
These are explanatory illustrations of scholarly categories, not verdicts on named works. The same book may be read as postmodern by one critic and as something else by another.
Further reading
For a scholarly treatment, Routledge lists Linda Hutcheon’s A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction, whose chapter topics include parody, historiographic metafiction, intertextuality, and history. It is a good next step for readers who want to see how these terms are developed in detail.
