The key distinction is that the aesthetic research concerns injections, not ordinary PDRN serums or moisturizers.
What is PDRN?
Polydeoxyribonucleotide, or PDRN, is a DNA-based material used in some medical and skin products. Dermatology reviews describe common sources as chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The DNA is purified and processed into fragments; “salmon sperm” is shorthand for the source, not a literal description of what is in a finished product. Source
What does the evidence say about PDRN for skin?
Studies of injections
A systematic review by Lampridou and colleagues, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025 and first published online on December 8, 2024, included nine aesthetic studies involving 219 patients. The authors searched for English-language primary studies published from January 1, 2010, through January 1, 2024. They rated the evidence as low to moderate quality. Review details
The included studies examined injected polynucleotide treatments. They differed in injection sites, techniques, follow-up periods, and outcomes, so the review did not establish a settled standard for optimal use. The authors described the findings as promising but called for larger, more rigorous studies before firm conclusions can be drawn. These results should be understood as preliminary evidence about injections, not proof that every PDRN treatment works.

Reported effects and risks
The review describes local effects including pain, swelling or edema, itching, bruising, and redness. No severe adverse events were reported in the included studies, but nine studies and 219 patients are not enough to establish that treatment is risk-free. Reported outcomes and adverse events
Is a PDRN serum the same as an injection?
No. An injection delivers material beneath the skin, while a serum or moisturizer is applied to the surface. The reviewed clinical studies assessed injected treatments; they do not establish that topical PDRN penetrates skin or produces the same outcomes. For a topical product, judge the specific formulation and its claims on their own evidence. Do not assume that results reported for injections apply to a bottle, or that a serum is an equivalent “needle-free” version of an injectable treatment.

How to assess a PDRN product or procedure
- Check the route: Is it an injectable procedure or a product applied to the skin?
- Match evidence to the claim: Look for evidence about that route and formulation rather than relying on studies of a different treatment.
- Review the label and claims: Check what the product says it contains and what it claims to do.
- For injections, discuss the procedure with a qualified clinician: The studies report local effects, and the available evidence does not establish zero risk.
- Check local rules: Product authorization and permitted claims depend on the specific product and jurisdiction; no universal approval status is established here.
