Sexuality, gender, and class
The book includes a young gay man drawn to an older man whose life holds hidden facts, women pushing against expectations of agreeable behavior, and a relationship marked by class difference. These conflicts broaden the collection beyond a simple contrast between “old-world” and “new-world” values: the characters face personal and social pressures that overlap in different ways.

Who Neel Patel is
Penguin Random House India describes Patel as a first-generation Indian American who grew up in Champaign, Illinois, and lives in Los Angeles. The publisher identifies this as his debut collection and says it was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and was long-listed for the Story Prize and the Aspen Words Literary Prize.
