Nazar is a 2D action-adventure platformer that combines live-action full-motion video with interactive gameplay. Set in a magical version of Cappadocia, it draws on Anatolian lore and Turkish shadow-play aesthetics while telling a science-fiction story about foresight, belief and reason. GamesBeat reported that the game debuted on Steam on November 4, 2024.
How Nazar blends film and platforming
Nazar is designed as an interactive film as well as a platform game. Its 2D action-adventure play includes navigation, puzzles, boss fights and resource management, with a roguelike structure. Live-action footage is integrated into that play rather than presented as a separate film.
Director and game designer Eray Dinç described Turkish shadow play as a key formal influence: “In Turkish culture, there is a tradition called the shadow play. I use this technique in the platform game, where we blend the 2D platformer genre with FMV interactive cinema.” The comparison helps explain the visual idea: filmed performers and a stylized, theatrical world meet the movement and challenges of a platformer.
Story and setting: a fantastical Cappadocia
The story takes place in a magical, fairy-like version of Cappadocia. Nazar, the protagonist, has foresight and parapsychological abilities and faces the Fatum cult, whose members use clairvoyance for harmful purposes. The story also includes the Misal Initiation, Nazar’s mentor Mergen and the assistant Tela.
#1 Best Overall
Cappadocia is more than a fictional backdrop: the creators said the game was filmed there. Simay Dinç’s Steam announcement also noted an original soundtrack by composer Inon Zur. The GamesBeat report says the actor playing Nazar ran more than 50 kilometers on Cappadocia’s rugged slopes during filming; that is a production detail reported in the 2024 interview, not an independently audited figure.
What Turkish history and culture mean in the game
The creators cite Anatolian lore, Turkish shadow-play aesthetics and rituals intended to prevent bad futures as inspirations, alongside science-fiction ideas. Eray Dinç said, “The culture provided my motivation and inspiration.” These references are presented as creative influences on the game’s style and story, not as a comprehensive account of Turkish history or religious practice.

Dinç has also framed the project as a story about how inherited superstitions can shape scientific reasoning and intellectual freedom, with Nazar representing a rational, secular viewpoint. That is the creator’s stated interpretation of the work; it should not be taken as a claim about Turkish society as a whole.
GamesBeat explains that “Nazar” refers in Turkish to the evil eye associated with accidents and trouble. The term has varied uses across cultures, so that description is best understood as the report’s account of the game’s cultural reference rather than a complete definition.

Who made Nazar?
GamesBeat identifies siblings Eray Dinç and Simay Dinç as the creative team behind Nazar, associating the project with Recontact Games and Eray Dinç Studio. It describes Eray Dinç’s roles as including direction, game design, writing, cinematography, production, post-production and sound, and names Simay Dinç as head of international partnerships.
The report says students from Istanbul Beykent University’s Digital Game Design Department contributed to Unity development and quality assurance. It puts the project team at 60 people across development, QA and artistic roles, and says production took about two and a half years. Those figures come from GamesBeat’s 2024 reporting. The article also notes Dinç’s earlier Recontact projects, including Recontact Istanbul, Eyes of Sky and Recontact: London, and says his films and video artworks had received more than 10 international awards; it does not enumerate those awards in the available account.

Why Nazar may interest documentary and film fans
Nazar is notable for using documentary-adjacent tools—location filming, live-action performance and cinematic composition—in a game built around player movement and decisions. Its subject is not a documentary account of Turkish history; it is a fictional, science-fiction adventure shaped by the creators’ cultural references and personal interpretation. That distinction matters for viewers looking for historical documentation rather than a culturally inspired work of interactive fiction.
