Minecraft is an open-ended, block-based sandbox game: you gather resources, craft, explore, build, and choose your own goals rather than follow one required campaign. Its standard modes are Creative and Survival, with Hardcore, Adventure, and Spectator offering other ways to play. Mojang’s anniversary timeline says Minecraft became the best-selling game of all time in 2016 and reached 300 million copies sold in 2023.
What is Minecraft?
Minecraft is a world made of blocks that players can break, collect, craft with, and place to build structures and landscapes. Its activities include exploring, gathering resources, surviving hostile creatures, and playing with others. Creatures can be fought or befriended, depending on how you play. The official Minecraft guide, “What is Minecraft?”, describes it as a sandbox with no set goal: players decide what to do.

What is the story of Minecraft?
The core sandbox game does not require players to follow a single story or campaign arc. Its “story” is the experience each player makes in the world: building a home, exploring, taking on survival challenges, or creating a world with friends. Minecraft’s official site lists Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends as separate games; they are not the required campaign for the core sandbox game.
What is the goal of Minecraft?
There is no required objective that every player must complete. Mojang’s guide puts it simply: “Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like!” Some players set personal projects, such as building a settlement or exploring, while others focus on surviving or playing in a world created by someone else.

What are Minecraft’s game modes?
The mode you choose changes how much pressure the game puts on building, resource gathering, and survival. The official Minecraft Help Center guide to game modes lists five modes.
| Mode | What it is for | How it plays |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | Building freely | Players have unlimited resources, can fly, are immune to damage, and break blocks quickly, without ordinary survival pressures. |
| Survival | Gathering and surviving | Players collect resources, craft, gain experience, and manage health and hunger while facing gravity and hostile creatures. |
| Hardcore | A one-life challenge | The Help Center describes a one-life mode: after death, players lose access to playing in that world, though they can observe it in Spectator mode. The introductory guide describes Hardcore as a Survival subcategory in Java Edition, so do not assume its availability or behavior is identical in every edition. |
| Adventure | Creator-designed experiences | Ordinary block breaking and placing are restricted unless permitted by special items, allowing creators to shape how players interact with a world. |
| Spectator | Observing a world | Players can fly through and observe the world without interacting with or changing it. |
Which mode should you choose?
- Choose Creative if you want to build without worrying about resources or danger.
- Choose Survival if you want gathering, crafting, and threats to shape your progress.
- Choose Hardcore if you want a one-life challenge and understand the edition-specific context.
- Choose Adventure for a creator-made experience with constrained interaction.
- Choose Spectator to watch a world rather than alter or play in it.
Why is Minecraft the best-selling game?
Mojang’s 15th-anniversary timeline identifies 2016 as the year Minecraft became the best-selling game of all time. The timeline later records 300 million copies sold in 2023. That is a dated milestone, not a current sales total; the timeline does not give a newer figure.

Which Minecraft edition can you play?
The official site presents Java & Bedrock Edition for PC and says the editions can be switched between through a unified launcher. Minecraft is also available across PC, console, and mobile categories, with edition differences depending on platform. The official PC store page names the product “Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC Standard Edition.” The right choice depends on your platform and how you want to play; these sources do not establish one edition as best for everyone.
