Its intimate approach may make for an emotional watch, but the response is personal—not guaranteed. Magnolia’s page lists digital viewing options and DVD and Blu-ray links; availability varies by country and service.
What the documentary is about
The film follows Jeff Buckley’s music, relationships, public profile and legacy. Buckley released his debut album, Grace, and became widely associated with his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” He later retreated to Memphis amid pressure to make a second album. He drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997, leaving that album unfinished, according to distributor Fremantle’s account.

The documentary is not simply a career chronology. Its perspective is shaped by personal testimony and material from Buckley’s archives, bringing people close to his life into the story.
How archival access shapes the film
Magnolia describes the film as drawing on never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives. In a January 2025 interview with the International Documentary Association, Berg said Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, shared his intimate voice messages with her in 2012 and agreed to their use in 2019. Berg said the depth of the archive helped persuade her to make a documentary rather than a narrative feature: “But the wealth of the archive convinced me that it would make a much stronger documentary.”
#1 Best Overall
- NOTE: This product is manufactured on demand in the BD-R format. It will play in nearly all leading Blu-ray players that have the latest firmware updates, but Microsoft Xbox One does not currently support BD-R playback.
That access gives the film a route into private as well as public life. Berg also described the portrait as emotionally complicated, including in its treatment of Buckley’s relationship with his father. The title’s promise of tears is best understood as an invitation to an affecting story, not a prediction that every viewer will react the same way.

- His mother, Mary Guibert

- Former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred
- Musicians including Ben Harper and Aimee Mann

Grace was Buckley’s debut and, as Fremantle describes it, his only studio album. The documentary’s account places the album’s success and the attention around “Hallelujah” alongside the pressure to make a follow-up. Listening to Grace can provide context for the music at the center of the film, but no particular album edition is recommended here.
