Manu Dash’s 2024 anthology The Big Book of Odia Literature brings together poetry, short stories, plays and essays to introduce readers to Odisha’s literary heritage. Its defining choice is a broad one: “Odia” encompasses not only writing in the Odia language but, as one reviewer explains, traditions from other languages spoken in the state as well.

What is included in The Big Book of Odia Literature?

This is a curated anthology, not a single-author history of Odisha’s writing. Penguin Random House India describes a collection of essays, stories, poems and plays selected to represent the culture of Odisha and its people. Abdullah Khan’s September 2024 review for Scroll identifies four sections: poetry, short stories, plays and essays.

The book’s historical reach is part of its promise. Penguin presents it as a journey through language, literature and song reaching back to the tenth century, while the review points to works spanning early and canonical writing through modern authors. That is the publisher’s framing of the anthology’s range, not a claim that the book establishes the origin date of Odia literature.

Does it include literature in languages other than Odia?

Yes. Khan’s review says the title’s use of “Odia” extends beyond works written in Odia to literary traditions associated with ethnic and linguistic minorities in Odisha. The review names Sambalpuri-Kosali and Adivasi language traditions as examples.

The reviewer refers to more than 30 languages spoken by minorities in Odisha when explaining this wide scope. That figure describes the linguistic landscape in the review; it is not a verified count of languages represented in the anthology. The key distinction is editorial: the collection treats Odisha’s literary heritage as larger than the output of any one language.

Who edited the anthology?

Manu Dash is the editor. Penguin identifies him as a bilingual poet, editor, translator and publisher, and as director of the Odisha Art & Literature Festival. His role here is to select and frame a range of writing, rather than to present the book as a continuous, single-author literary history.

How accessible is it to readers new to Odisha’s literature?

Khan considers Dash’s introduction useful context for English-language readers encountering the material. The review also notes a limitation: Romanised versions of some poems would have made the original-language texts more accessible. This is one reviewer’s assessment, but it points to a practical consideration for readers who want to engage with the languages as well as the translated or contextualised material.
