Early reviews are broadly positive about the sequel’s spectacle and performances, while some critics say it repeats the original without matching its emotional force.
What is Gladiator II’s Rotten Tomatoes score?
The Rotten Tomatoes first-review roundup displays a 70% Tomatometer score. The page is a roundup, and its displayed figure may change as reviews are added or its listing is updated. The available record does not establish the score at the precise moment the original headline was published, so 70% should not be described as a confirmed first-minute or launch-time score.

The Tomatometer represents the proportion of counted reviews that Rotten Tomatoes classifies as positive. It is not an average star rating, nor does it mean that every viewer will find the film 70% enjoyable.
Why is Gladiator II’s Rotten Tomatoes score surprising?
The surprise is best understood as a contrast between an eagerly anticipated sequel and a favorable—but not unanimous—early critical response. The roundup’s 70% display reflects a majority-positive reception, not universal acclaim. Critics praise the scale and action, but some question whether the story feels fresh enough to justify returning to the world of the 2000 film.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter, quoted by Rotten Tomatoes, praised its “brutal spectacle, elaborate period reconstruction, and vigorous set pieces requiring complex choreography.” Tim Grierson of Screen International identified the central reservation: “Ultimately Gladiator II is diminished by a nagging recognition that this material felt fresher in the first film.”
Owen Gleiberman of Variety captured the gap between entertainment and emotional impact: “At Gladiator II, are we not entertained? We are. But that’s not necessarily the same as enthralled.”
Rank #2
- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
Is Gladiator II as good as the original?
Early reviews suggest a qualified comparison rather than a clear consensus that the sequel surpasses its predecessor. On spectacle, reviewers see the sequel delivering elaborate action and large-scale period filmmaking. On freshness and emotional force, some say it leans too heavily on the first film’s material.
Those are distinct measures: a viewer can enjoy the battles and performances while still feeling the story lacks the original’s impact. The early roundup does not settle a personal comparison, and its score is not a direct rating of how the sequel compares with the 2000 film.

What is the sequel about?
Paramount’s official film listing identifies Gladiator II as a sequel to the Maximus story and gives its premiere date as November 22, 2024. Paul Mescal plays Lucius, alongside Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius, Joseph Quinn as Geta, Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, and Denzel Washington as Macrinus.
Associated Press critic Jake Coyle described a Rome “teeter[ing] on the brink” and wrote that “the dream it once symbolized is dead.” Those lines are Coyle’s review, not an official studio description. AP awarded the film three stars out of four and lists a 148-minute runtime and an R rating for strong bloody violence.
