Mirza Farhatullah Baig’s Dehli Ki Aakhri Shama is a work of Urdu fiction about a Delhi mushaira and the literary culture around it. Set in 1261 AH, identified as 1845 in a recent English edition’s title, it evokes poets, poetry lovers and the customs of a gathering under Bahadur Shah Zafar. Its historical value is as a literary rendering of that world—not as proof that the particular event happened exactly as narrated.

What is Dehli Ki Aakhri Shama about?

The story follows the preparations for a mushaira, a poetry gathering, and culminates in the recitations. Its world includes Urdu poets and poetry lovers, with particular attention to Delhi’s Urdu-speaking intelligentsia. The poems are chiefly ghazals, and the narrative evokes people and places in the city that are now less familiar.

The 2024 English-edition description names Mirza Ghalib and Momin Khan among the poets in their prime, Daagh as a young poet, and the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar in a brief appearance. These figures help situate the gathering within the literary imagination of the period.

Is the mushaira in the story historical?

The title record associates the story with a mushaira in Delhi in 1261 AH, while the 2024 English edition frames the date as 1845. The publisher describes the episode as a fictional account that “purports to be” the last great mushaira under Bahadur Shah Zafar; a library catalogue also classifies the book as fiction. The records establishing the edition and its setting do not authenticate this specific gathering as a documented historical event.

Baig’s account is described as drawing on living memory, manuscripts and other documents. That background may inform its social detail, but it does not turn the narrated proceedings into a verified transcript. The book is best read as a literary lens on mushaira customs, literary hierarchy and the cultural world it represents.

Which editions and translations are available?

Title spellings vary with transliteration: Dehli ki Akhri Shama, Dilli Ki Aakhri Shama and Dihlī kī āk̲h̲irī shamʿ refer to the Urdu title. English editions also use different titles, so checking the translator and ISBN helps distinguish them.

Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu catalogue record Urdu; a 1992 edition catalogued at 109 pages and edited by Rasheed Hasan Khan. CiNii Books catalogue record. This record identifies that edition; it does not establish the work’s original publication or serialization date.

Which English translation should you choose?

  • For the 2024 edition: choose the Manjul / Amaryllis paperback if you want the edition whose listing describes a complete translation of the 1991 critical edition and includes original Urdu ghazals alongside translations.
  • For the earlier translation: the 2010 Akhtar Qamber edition is a distinct option; its listing specifies an introduction, annotations and glossary.
  • For Urdu: look for the Urdu Academy-listed edition, checking availability and price with the seller because catalogue details do not guarantee current stock or retail terms.

The available descriptions do not establish that either English edition is the only or definitive way to read the work. Use the title and ISBN to confirm that a listing matches the edition you intend to buy or borrow.

Why read it as literary history?

The novel’s interest lies in how it renders a mushaira as a social and literary occasion: a gathering shaped by preparation, recitation, poetic standing and the presence of an Urdu-speaking intellectual community. Its remembered people and places also offer a prose evocation of Delhi’s literary culture. Because the central event is presented as fiction, those details illuminate a cultural imagination rather than independently proving what happened at one particular gathering.
