Gunn describes it as an effort to do good outside the influence of government, corporations and the Justice Gang. Its future operations have not been revealed, but Gunn has said the group is important to the larger DCU story he has planned.
What is Checkmate in the DCU?
Checkmate is the organization Adebayo and the 11th Street Kids decide to form in the Peacemaker season 2 finale. Its reported members include Langston Fleury, Sasha Bordeaux and Judomaster, alongside the familiar group. Gunn connected its creation to Harcourt and Economos’ moral turn and the desire to put Adrian’s “blood money” to a good use.
Gunn’s stated aim is for Checkmate to operate separately from the DCU’s established power structures: government, corporations and the Justice Gang. That describes the group’s intended independence, not a guarantee that it will always act ethically or stay free of outside influence. The finale and Gunn’s comments establish its founding purpose, but not a detailed charter, chain of command or set of missions. Gunn’s post-finale interview with Den of Geek was published October 10, 2025.
Why is Checkmate important to the DCU?
Gunn has said Checkmate is one of the elements with major implications for the DCU story he had mapped out, alongside Salvation, the prison planet. That makes Checkmate a deliberately planted piece of the wider narrative rather than just a name introduced in the finale. Gunn has also linked it to Man of Tomorrow, but has not explained the organization’s specific role there or elsewhere.

For now, its significance is clear at the level of intention: the DCU has a new organization meant to act beyond the usual institutions and metahuman teams. What it will do, how it will be funded or governed, and whether it will succeed in its stated purpose remain unknown. Gunn’s comments do not confirm a standalone Checkmate film or series.
Is DCU Checkmate based on the comics?
Yes. The comic-book Checkmate is a covert organization with a chess motif, and Gunn has specifically cited Greg Rucka’s 2006 series as an inspiration. He told Den of Geek, “Those Greg Rucka stories are just comics I really love, so I always wanted to build Checkmate into the DCU somehow.”

The comics organization first appeared in Action Comics #598, published in March 1988. Its ranks draw on chess pieces, including Kings, Queens, Bishops, Rooks, Knights and Pawns. Rucka’s second ongoing series, which began in 2006, used a structure divided into White and Black sides: White handled intelligence leadership, while Black handled operations. That version was described as UN-sanctioned.
How the comic and DCU versions differ
| Aspect | Greg Rucka’s 2006 comics version | DCU version |
|---|---|---|
| Institutional position | UN-sanctioned organization. | Gunn says it is intended to be independent of government, corporations and the Justice Gang. |
| Known purpose or structure | White and Black divisions separated intelligence and operational functions. | The founding group’s stated intention is to do good outside established institutions; its operating structure has not been disclosed. |
| Known future scope | Published stories establish a defined comic-book history and structure. | Gunn says Checkmate matters to his broader DCU plan, but has not explained its future actions. |
The shared name and chess-inspired concept do not mean the screen version has the comic organization’s exact personnel, authority or hierarchy. Gunn has identified an influence, not promised a direct reproduction.

It is optional background: the DCU organization’s story is being introduced on screen, and the interview does not make knowledge of the comics necessary to understand the finale.
