A BL drama is a television or streaming series in the BL genre, where BL stands for Boys’ Love: fiction centred on romantic or sexual relationships between male characters. The label tells you the genre and the medium. It does not tell you the characters’ identities, who made the show, or how accurately it portrays gay life.

What BL means

Mark McLelland’s introduction to Boys Love Manga and Beyond (University Press of Mississippi, published through Oxford Academic on 28 January 2015) describes BL as Japanese fictional media centred on romantic or sexual relationships between male characters. The key word is “fictional.” BL is a category of stories, not a synonym for every story about gay men, and not a label for real people.

Akiko Hori’s 2024 article in Gender History adds that the genre has existed since the 1970s and that its name and main media have shifted over that time. Any definition that treats BL as one fixed thing will be out of date for some part of its history.

What “BL drama” adds to the definition

“BL drama” applies the genre to a drama format, meaning live-action or screen series. The same genre also exists in manga, novels and other forms, so a reader searching for BL drama is looking at one medium inside a larger body of work. Comparisons between a manga and its adaptation, for example, depend on keeping the medium clear.

Terminology: four labels, four different uses

McLelland’s chapter identifies four labels that have been used historically: shōnen’ai, JUNE, yaoi and BL. They are not interchangeable for every period or medium, and using them as if they were timeless synonyms misreads how the genre’s vocabulary developed.

Label What the sources establish How to use it today
Shōnen’ai One of the four historical labels named in McLelland’s 2015 chapter. Use when describing older or period-specific usage, and note the source.
JUNE One of the four historical labels named in McLelland’s 2015 chapter. Use only in a historical context; it is not a general synonym for BL.
Yaoi One of the four historical labels named in McLelland’s 2015 chapter. Common in older discussion and fan usage; treat it as a term with its own history rather than a exact equivalent of BL.
BL The label Thailand Foundation describes as the more common international term for Thai series. The default label for most modern, international discussion.

The sources do not give dated, comparative usage counts for these four labels, so treat the table as a guide to context, not a timeline.

Regional names: BL and waai

For Thai productions, the Thailand Foundation’s explainer on Thai Boys’ Love series (approximately 2023) reports that international audiences commonly say “BL,” while Thai usage more often says waai (วาย) or “Y.” This is a regional usage note. It does not mean every Thai creator or viewer uses one term, and other countries’ series may use other local vocabulary.

Who makes and watches BL

BL has often been described as female-oriented and frequently associated with female creators. The sources support that as a tendency, not a rule. A 2018 study in Frontiers in Psychology, “Loving the love of boys: Motives for consuming yaoi media,” examines why people consume this material, and the wider scholarship stresses varied audiences. Do not assume a show’s viewers or writers share a single profile.

A BL label is not a verdict on representation

Being BL says nothing about how well a show portrays queer life. Hori notes a complex relationship between LGBTQ people and BL, and this has become more visible as live-action series bring real actors into the discussion. Hori writes: “We need to understand how the definition of BL, the genre itself, the names given to it, and its media have transitioned over the years and be precise about when and which medium we are discussing.” That is an argument for precision, not a quality rating.

Judge a particular series on its own evidence: its characters, how their relationships are shown, what the story says about gay or queer life, and who is behind the production.

How to read a specific BL drama

When you evaluate or compare BL dramas, use four axes:

  • Country and production context: where the series was made and by whom, since usage and audience expectations vary by region.
  • Medium and format: whether it is a live-action drama, animation or an adaptation of manga or a novel.
  • Relationship focus: whether the story centres the romance, the wider social world, or both.
  • Treatment of LGBTQ experience: how queer life is depicted, and whether the story is written with that in mind.

These axes are an editorial framework drawn from the scholarship, not an official classification. Availability also varies by territory and changes over time, so check the current listing in your country before you watch.

What this overview does not establish

The sources cited here do not provide verified figures for BL drama’s market size, audience size or viewing numbers, so this article makes no such claims. McLelland’s chapter places BL within a longer Japanese cultural history, but that is a different claim from saying live-action BL dramas have roots in earlier periods; the sources do not establish the latter.
