In common Western usage, the term usually refers to Western classical music—but it is not a universal category or a measure of musical worth. Its meaning depends on the tradition and context being discussed.
What does “art music” mean?
In Western writing, “art music” most often describes music connected with the Western classical tradition. The label may refer to repertories shaped by formal composition, written scores, specialized institutions, or practices that invite sustained study. No single feature defines every tradition that may be called art music.

The phrase is widely used, but it can carry an elitist implication: that some music is inherently more serious or valuable than other music. The Encyclopedia.com musicology article calls that connotation “undesirable and inaccurate.” It is more precise to name the tradition—such as Western art music—than to treat “art” as a ranking.
Is art music the same as classical music?
Often, the terms overlap in everyday Western usage, but “classical music” has two meanings. It can describe the broad Western classical tradition, or the narrower Classical style associated with the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. If the distinction matters, specify which meaning you intend.

“Art music” is not a perfect alternative: it too can suggest a hierarchy or obscure cultural differences. Both labels are most useful when their context is clear.
Does art music have to be written down?
No. Written notation has been important to many Western classical institutions and repertories. A score can help performers reproduce a composition and give listeners or scholars a basis for detailed analysis. But notation is one feature of particular histories, not a universal test for whether music is artistic.
Art-music traditions exist in many world cultures, and musical knowledge can be transmitted orally, through notation, recordings, or a mixture of methods. The educational text Music: Its Language, History, and Culture describes ethnomusicology as the study of music of oral tradition, including “the art music produced by various world cultures.”
How does art music differ from folk or popular music?
There is no fixed checklist that separates the categories. They can differ in how music is transmitted, who supports or performs it, where it is heard, and how a community or scholar classifies it. Those distinctions can be useful for describing a particular case, but they do not establish that one category is more complex, serious, or valuable.

The boundaries around art, folk, popular, jazz, and crossover music have shifted over time. Jazz has been a site of debate about classification, while progressive rock is one example of a style that crosses expected categories. Such cases show that boundaries are contested; they do not mean that every jazz or rock performance is art music.

When the label seems uncertain, describe the music’s tradition, setting, transmission, and how people involved classify it. That approach is more informative than forcing a rigid genre box.
