Alec Baldwin is the subject of The Trial of Alec Baldwin, a documentary directed by Rory Kennedy about the fatal 2021 shooting on the set of Rust and its personal, legal and media aftermath. Blue Ant Media announced in September 2026 that it had acquired U.S. and international licensing rights. That announcement does not establish when or where the film will be available in every territory.
What is The Trial of Alec Baldwin about?
The film follows Baldwin through the fallout from the 2021 shooting on the Rust set, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed, and the media storm that followed. Blue Ant Media describes the documentary as examining the difference between the facts in a legal case and the story built around a prominent public figure. Blue Ant Media’s September 17, 2026 announcement and Newsday’s September 2026 trailer report both identify the shooting and its aftermath as the film’s subject.

Who directed the documentary?
The Trial of Alec Baldwin is directed by Rory Kennedy. Speaking to Variety ahead of the film’s 2025 DOC NYC premiere, Kennedy said: “This story is a tricky one because there is Halyna, who is the victim in this story and I, of course have enormous empathy for Halyna and her family given my own background and experience.” Variety reported Kennedy’s comments.
Is the documentary meant to rebuild Baldwin’s career?
That purpose is not established. The phrase “turns to new documentary to rebuild career” is a headline framing, not a verified description from Baldwin or the filmmakers in the available reporting. Blue Ant Media’s stated description centers on the case, its facts and the public narrative around Baldwin; it does not say the film was made as a career-rebuilding effort. Blue Ant Media’s announcement is the source for that description.
