In Bridgerton season 4, a ward is a dependent under another person’s care. Sophie Baek is called Lord Penwood’s ward, but the label is a public cover: she is his biological daughter, whom he raises in his household while presenting her as a dependent rather than acknowledging her as his child.
What the word means
Shondaland’s glossary of the show’s terms defines a ward as a legal dependent under a guardian’s care. That is the basic meaning the word carries in the series. It describes a person’s place in a household, not a blood relationship, so a guardian can provide a home, support and social standing without being a parent.
In Sophie’s case, the word works mainly as a public status. It explains why she lives at Penwood House and why people outside the household see her as someone taken in by a benefactor rather than as family.
Why Lord Penwood calls Sophie his ward
Netflix’s season explainer says Lord Penwood raises Sophie as his ward so that he can care for and raise her while avoiding the scandal of claiming her as his own blood relation. Netflix identifies him as her biological father, and says Sophie understood their relationship despite the public story.

In Netflix’s interview published March 2, 2026, Yerin Ha, who plays Sophie, states the underlying fact plainly: “Sophie is the illegitimate child of Lord Penwood. Her mother was a maid.” The word “ward” conceals that parentage.
The public story and what the series establishes
| Aspect | Public story | What the series establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Relationship to Lord Penwood | Ward under his care | Biological daughter |
| Background | Orphan taken in by a benefactor (Shondaland’s description) | Illegitimate child whose mother was a maid (Netflix interview, March 2, 2026) |
| Standing at Penwood House | Raised with benefits associated with nobility | Her position depends on the public label; it ends when Lord Penwood dies |
| Araminta’s view | Not stated publicly in the household | Recognizes Sophie as Lord Penwood’s child and worries about what that could mean for her own daughters’ financial security |
What happens after Lord Penwood dies
After Lord Penwood dies, Araminta makes Sophie a maid in the household. Sophie loses the social position and comforts she had as a ward. Netflix’s character guide describes the arrangement as an unpaid maid position offered under the guise of protection.

Showrunner Jess Brownell explains the change in Netflix’s March 2, 2026 interview: “Sophie’s forced to work for a family who does not treat her with the respect that the maids get at Bridgerton House, [or] even Featherington House.”
Why the label matters to the plot
The word “ward” is both Sophie’s public status and a cover for a parent-child relationship with social and financial consequences. Because Araminta knows the truth, the secret carries stakes beyond Sophie herself: it touches the financial security of Araminta’s own daughters. That is why the season treats the label as more than a technicality.
