A reading charity is an organization that promotes literacy, reading for enjoyment, access to books, shared reading, or some combination of these goals. You can support one with a donation, volunteer time, or books—but first check that the particular organization needs that kind of help and serves your area.
What a reading charity does
“Reading charity” is a practical description, not a single standardized legal category. Charities can pursue different aims: teaching literacy skills, encouraging reading for pleasure, connecting people through shared reading, or improving access to books and reading resources.
In England and Wales, the Charity Commission describes The Reading Agency’s charitable object as advancing public education by encouraging reading and promoting literacy skills. The Reader Organisation’s stated purpose focuses on making shared reading available to people of different ages and backgrounds, with the aims of supporting wellbeing and building communities. These are distinct approaches, not a ranking of which organization is more effective.
For example, Bookmark Reading Charity works with children and schools through reading support, resources, teacher training, school reading culture, and family engagement. Reading Heart, a US 501(c)(3) book-donation program, describes its work as serving children in hospitals and communities with limited book access. These examples show why it is worth checking a charity’s specific purpose rather than assuming that every reading charity provides the same service.

Why this work matters
Reading charities address different barriers and opportunities: a child may need help building reading skills, a school may need books or resources, or a community may benefit from reading together. The National Year of Reading 2026 FAQ reports that one in three UK children and young people aged 8 to 18 said they enjoyed reading in their free time, while one in five said they read something daily. Those figures are attributed to the National Literacy Trust’s 2025 Annual Literacy Survey.
The same FAQ reports that 29% of pupils aged 9 to 10 in England said they “very much like reading,” compared with an international average of 46%, citing PIRLS 2021. These are survey findings as presented by the campaign FAQ; consult the original reports for detailed methodology. They describe reading attitudes and habits, not the impact of any particular charity.
Examples of reading charity work
Bookmark Reading Charity: reading support for children and schools in the UK
Bookmark’s 2024/25 impact reporting says it reached 180,979 children through 10 literacy programmes, a 92% increase year on year. It also reports supporting 399 schools and delivering 70,329 books during that academic year. These are Bookmark’s own reported reach and activity figures; they should not be read as independently audited proof that a particular program caused a particular outcome.
Bookmark says more than 2,000 volunteers deliver its one-to-one programme. Teachers identify children in Years 1 to 6 for regular 30-minute reading sessions. Its other described activities include book bundles, school grants, reading clubs, family engagement, resources and spaces, and teacher training. Bookmark also reports delivering 40,239 one-to-one reading sessions in 2024/25.

A school may benefit from resources, a grant, reading spaces, or help building a reading culture; families may engage through the charity’s family work. Bookmark’s impact report also quotes a teacher who said access to professional development helped them develop reading-for-pleasure initiatives and a whole-school approach. That is one teacher’s account, not a guaranteed result for every school or pupil.

The Reader Organisation and The Reading Agency: different UK missions
The Reader Organisation’s stated focus is shared reading, wellbeing, and community. The Reading Agency’s charitable object centers on encouraging reading and promoting literacy skills. Their purposes illustrate the range within the term “reading charity”; they do not establish a like-for-like comparison of results.
Reading Heart: books and volunteers in the US
Reading Heart invites donations of new or gently loved books and volunteer support for work with children in hospitals and communities with limited book access. Its website also presents book-drop-off, donation, and wish-list links. Its invitation applies to Reading Heart, not to every organization working on reading; confirm its current accepted items and local delivery arrangements before buying or sending books.
How to support a reading charity
Donate money
- Choose a cause and location. Check who the charity serves and whether its work matches the kind of support you want to provide, such as literacy instruction, shared reading, school resources, or book access.
- Verify the organization. Check its official site, current reports, and relevant charity or nonprofit registration details. The examples here are UK-centered, apart from Reading Heart in the United States; registration and giving arrangements vary by country.
- Use its official donation route. Follow the charity’s own donation page and review any instructions there. Bookmark credits donors and partners as part of its support base; the National Year of Reading also describes campaign-specific organizational pledge and sponsorship routes.
There is no single donation amount or payment method that fits every organization covered here. Check the charity’s current page for its available options and any instructions. If you are considering a larger or recurring gift, look at its latest reporting and make sure its mission and geography match what you want to support.

Volunteer
Look for a role that fits your location, schedule, and skills. Ask what training, safeguarding checks, eligibility, and regular time commitment apply before signing up. Bookmark reports volunteer-led one-to-one reading sessions, while Reading Heart invites volunteers; the roles and requirements are organization-specific.
If you are interested in working directly with children, do not assume that a general offer of help is enough to begin. Contact the organization and follow its current recruitment and safeguarding process. Bookmark’s reported model gives a useful indication of the commitment that one particular program involves: teachers identify pupils in Years 1 to 6 for regular sessions of 30 minutes. It is not evidence that every reading charity uses the same age range, session length, or volunteer process.

Donate books
Contact the charity before purchasing or dropping off books. Ask which ages or reading levels it needs, what condition books must be in, whether it accepts unsolicited donations, and whether it wants drop-off or shipment. Reading Heart explicitly invites new or gently loved books, but that does not mean other reading charities accept physical books or can use every title.
If a charity confirms that books are useful, follow its current item and delivery instructions rather than sending a box without notice. Reading Heart’s website includes drop-off, donation, and wish-list links, but readers should verify those arrangements directly before buying or shipping anything. No particular retailer or book type is endorsed here; the best purchase, if one is needed, depends on the recipient charity’s current request.

A business, school, or community group can ask a relevant organization about partnership, fundraising, or sponsorship opportunities. The National Year of Reading 2026 FAQ describes a pledge-partner route for organizations and a sponsorship contact; these are campaign-specific and subject to review, so check the campaign’s current instructions before making plans. Bookmark also identifies donors and partners as part of its support base, but any proposed arrangement should be discussed with the charity itself.
How to choose an organization
Start with the people you want to help and the kind of contribution you can realistically make. A charity focused on school-based reading sessions may suit someone able to volunteer regularly; a book-access program may be a better fit for someone whose local community needs books. A donation is useful only if it supports the organization’s actual work.
- Who and where: Identify the intended audience and the places the charity serves. Confirm that its work reaches the people or region you care about.
- How it works: Look for whether the organization provides tutoring, shared reading, books, school resources, or community programming. Two charities with reading in their names may have very different activities.
- Current needs: Check whether it is seeking money, volunteers, books, or another form of assistance now. Needs can vary, so do not assume a past request is still current.
- Commitment: For volunteering, confirm the role’s schedule, location, eligibility, training, and safeguarding requirements. For books, confirm condition, age range, and delivery method before buying or sending them.
- Transparency: Review recent reports and note whether figures describe activity, reach, or independently assessed outcomes. These measures are not interchangeable.
The available examples show meaningful differences in audience and delivery model, but they do not provide a complete, like-for-like effectiveness comparison. For instance, Bookmark reports children reached, schools supported, books delivered, and reading sessions; those activity measures are useful context but do not by themselves establish causal impact. Choose based on fit, current needs, and the information each organization publishes—not on one headline number alone.

Frequently asked questions
Can I donate books to a reading charity?
Sometimes. Reading Heart invites new or gently loved books, but not all reading charities accept unsolicited books. Ask the organization what age range and condition it needs, and whether it accepts drop-offs or shipments, before you buy or send anything.
How do I volunteer to help children read?
Start with a charity serving children in your area and review its current volunteer roles. Ask about the time commitment, training, eligibility, and safeguarding process. Bookmark reports that teachers identify children in Years 1 to 6 for regular 30-minute sessions with volunteers; other organizations may have different roles and requirements.
How do I choose a literacy charity?
Compare who it serves, where it works, its approach, and what it currently needs. Then review recent reports to understand what its figures measure. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like effectiveness ranking, so a published reach figure alone is not enough to determine which charity is the best fit.
Is a reading charity the same as a literacy charity?
Not necessarily. “Reading charity” is a broad descriptive phrase. An organization may focus on literacy skills, reading enjoyment, shared reading, access to books, or several of these goals. Check its stated purpose and activities rather than relying on the label.
