The name refers to a messenger or guide from the afterlife, rather than simply a figure who causes death. The closest English comparison is the Grim Reaper, but the roles and imagery are not identical.
What is a Korean grim reaper called?
Jeoseung (저승) means the afterlife or world of the dead, while saja means “messenger” or “emissary.” The Korea Tourism Organization explains the contrast between jeoseung and iseung (this world), describing the jeoseung saja as a messenger who guides souls from this world to the next: Korea Tourism Organization. The National Folk Museum of Korea likewise defines the figure as a messenger of the afterworld: National Folk Museum of Korea.
Jeoseungchasa is another romanization used in academic writing about this figure. You may also encounter other Korean terms for the afterlife, including myeongbu and hwangcheon, in the Academy of Korean Studies’ encyclopedia: Academy of Korean Studies.
What does a jeoseung saja do?
In the broad description offered by Korean cultural sources, the jeoseung saja serves as an envoy between the living world and the afterlife, guiding the dead onward. Calling the figure a “grim reaper” helps an English-speaking reader recognize the subject, but “messenger” or “guide” more directly describes this role. The word alone does not establish one universal story about how the figure appears, chooses a soul, or carries out the journey.

Is the Korean grim reaper the same as the Western Grim Reaper?
They are comparable as figures associated with death, but the comparison should not be taken as an exact equivalence. “Grim Reaper” is an English shorthand; jeoseung saja emphasizes a messenger or guide to the afterlife. A particular tale, religious image, or television drama may give the Korean figure additional duties or a distinctive appearance, but those details do not automatically apply across Korean traditions.
How Korean afterlife traditions shape the figure
Korean ideas about life after death are not one fixed system. The Academy of Korean Studies explains that these ideas developed through traditions including shamanism, Buddhism, and Taoism, while Confucian ideas about the afterlife are less clearly defined; multiple conceptions coexist. Its overview of Korean afterlife beliefs is available at the Academy of Korean Studies’ encyclopedia.

The Buddhist Ten Kings imagery
One specific context is Buddhist underworld imagery. The National Museum of Korea describes paintings in which underworld kings appear with two messengers. In the belief represented there, seven of the Ten Kings judge the dead at seven-day intervals through the 49th day after death. This is a description of Buddhist imagery and belief, not a universal account of what all Koreans believe or a rule that defines every jeoseung saja: National Museum of Korea.

Modern screen stories adapt the figure for their own plots. Academic work has examined portrayals in Goblin, Along with the Gods, and Tomorrow. Those works are useful examples of contemporary interpretation, not proof that every Korean tradition shares their character design or rules. For any specific trait—such as clothing, authority, or the way a soul is escorted—identify the drama or film rather than treating it as a universal folklore detail.
