A green room is an offstage space near or behind a theatre stage where performers can meet, wait, relax or prepare when they are not performing. The name describes the room’s backstage function—not its paint colour—and its exact setup depends on the venue.
What happens in a green room?
The American Association of Community Theatre defines a green room as a room close to the stage where actors meet and relax. More broadly, backstage spaces of this kind can serve as a place to wait, review a script or setlist, touch up makeup or rehearse. Those are possible uses, not a checklist every theatre provides. The Old Vic says performers may use its green room before, during or after a performance.
Its practical role is to give performers a place offstage while keeping them connected to the work happening onstage. Theatres arrange backstage spaces differently, so the term does not guarantee particular furnishings, facilities or access arrangements. A Theatres Trust account, for example, describes a show caller linked by headset to the dressing room, green room and control box—an illustration of how these spaces can fit into a venue’s own backstage layout.
Does a green room have to be green?
No. “Green room” is a functional name, not a colour requirement. The Old Vic’s official glossary puts it plainly: “Most theatres have a green room – but ours is blue.”

Why is it called a green room?
The origin of the name is uncertain. Several explanations have been proposed, but the available evidence does not establish which, if any, is correct.
- Green walls or furnishings: One theory links the name to rooms that were decorated in green.
- “Greengage” slang: Another proposed connection is Cockney slang using “greengage” for the stage.
- A “scene room”: Backstage recounts a theory that the expression developed from “scene room.”
- Relief from stage lights: An explanation published in 1894 suggested green walls could ease the glare of stage lighting. The American Association of Community Theatre questions this account because the term was recorded before limelight came into use.
These remain theories, not settled origins. An early written example can show that the phrase was in use by a particular date; it cannot by itself tell us how the name first arose.

When does the phrase first appear in the record?
World Wide Words identifies a line in Thomas Shadwell’s play The True Widow, first performed at London’s Dorset Garden Theatre in December 1678, as the earliest recorded example it found: “No, Madam: Selfish, this Evening, in a green Room, behind the Scenes, was before-hand with me”. The source attributes the passage to the character Stanmore. Colley Cibber’s Love Makes Man, published in 1701, provides a later recorded example.
Neither example proves where the term originated. They establish that it was being used in theatrical contexts by the late seventeenth century, while the naming story remains unknown.
