Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor live streaming, your upload speed must reliably exceed your stream’s bitrate, with spare capacity for fluctuations and other devices. There is no single speed that suits every stream: resolution, frame rate, codec, platform, and network stability all change what you need. Start with the bitrate recommended for your settings, then test under realistic conditions.
Upload speed matters more than download speed
Your encoder sends video and audio from your device to the streaming platform, so the relevant connection measure is sustained upload speed. A fast advertised download speed does not show whether your connection can keep sending a stream at its chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate in its live encoder settings guidance.
Bitrate and internet speed are both commonly expressed in Mbps, or megabits per second. The encoder bitrate is the stream’s outgoing data rate; it is not, by itself, a recommended internet-plan speed. Plan for additional upload capacity rather than using the entire connection for the stream.
How much upload headroom should you allow?
Two practical rules of thumb offer a starting point, not a guarantee. Twitch’s undated FAQ guidance says upload speed should be the configured stream bitrate plus 30%; its example is that a 6 Mbps stream may need at least 8 Mbps upload. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests starting with a stream bitrate at about 75% of total upload speed. These approaches are similar for a 6 Mbps stream, but actual stability depends on your connection and other network traffic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Using Twitch’s example: 6 Mbps plus 30% is 7.8 Mbps, rounded to at least 8 Mbps upload.
- Using OBS’s heuristic: a 6 Mbps stream at 75% of upload capacity also implies about 8 Mbps total upload.
For a different setting, calculate headroom from the bitrate you intend to use. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for a 1080p60 H.264 stream. Applying OBS’s 75% starting heuristic gives about 22.7 Mbps upload (17 ÷ 0.75); that is a calculation from OBS’s general guidance, not a YouTube-mandated minimum or a promise of stable service.
YouTube recommended bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec
The following are YouTube’s currently published recommended encoder bitrates, accessed October 3, 2026. They are stream settings, not guaranteed minimum internet-plan speeds. The recommendation varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Choose the row and codec that match your actual encoder output, then leave upload headroom above that bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings page also recommends a speed test and a pre-stream test. Its publication date is not displayed, so platform guidance may change.
How to check whether your connection is ready
- Set the intended output first. Choose your platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec, then use its recommended bitrate as your starting encoder setting.
- Measure upload under realistic conditions. Run a speed test when your household or workplace is using the network as it will be during the stream. A single peak result does not establish that upload will remain steady for the whole broadcast.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream, if available. Match the expected audio and on-screen movement. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and checking stream health during the event.
- Check the stream’s health indicators. If you see dropped frames or instability, reduce bitrate and test again before changing your internet plan or buying equipment.
What to do when a stream drops frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Work through likely causes in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Bitrate too high for available upload: lower the video bitrate and repeat a test. OBS recommends 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a fixed threshold.
- Wi-Fi interference or instability: try a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming.
- Router, modem, cable, or network hardware: inspect connections and test with known-good equipment before replacing anything. OBS identifies faulty network devices and cables as possible causes; it does not prescribe a particular cable category.
- VPN or network-optimization software: temporarily test without it if safe and appropriate; OBS lists these as possible sources of interference.
- Ingest-server route or ISP congestion: try another server where the platform allows it. If local troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting your ISP; congestion or ISP-side changes may be involved.
- Dynamic bitrate: OBS offers it as a fallback. It can reduce video quality as conditions change and does not repair the underlying network problem.
Do not assume that dropped frames automatically mean you need a faster plan or a new router. First compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload, then isolate Wi-Fi, hardware, software, and route issues.
Twitch guidance and its limits
Twitch’s FAQ gives the bitrate-plus-30% upload rule and the 6 Mbps-to-at-least-8 Mbps example. Twitch’s broadcasting-guidelines search result also emphasizes that higher bitrate uses more available bandwidth and that stability matters more than pushing quality until frames drop. Twitch’s pages were not directly available for inspection here, so this article does not assert a current maximum bitrate or provide a detailed Twitch settings table. Check Twitch’s streaming FAQ for its current guidance.
