What Inspired The Last of Us? Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley Explain

The Last of Us drew on a silent-character concept, survival horror, specific books and films, and Planet Earth footage of cordyceps affecting insects.

The Last of Us grew from several ideas, not one source: an unused Uncharted 2 scenario about forming a bond without dialogue, survival horror as a way to put characters under pressure, and nature-documentary footage of fungus infecting insects. Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley also cited books and films for particular storytelling qualities—not as plot templates.

Ellie’s early ancestor was a silent character in an unused Uncharted 2 idea

Neil Druckmann described an imagined Uncharted 2 sequence called “The Mute Girl.” It centered on a teenage girl who did not speak. The design question was whether players could grow attached to her through shared action and discovery rather than dialogue. The sequence was never made, but Druckmann said the idea stayed with him and Bruce Straley as they considered their next project. In the GamesBeat interview, Druckmann recalled: “That idea stuck in the back of our minds when we started discussing our next project.”

The lasting contribution was the relationship concept, not a direct transfer of that unused scene into the finished game. The creators began asking how a game could build a relationship over time through what the player and companion do together.

Survival horror was meant to create pressure for character drama

Druckmann and Straley wanted danger and scarcity to make decisions matter. Survival horror offered a setting where characters would be forced to respond to immediate threats, and where those responses could reveal who they were. Straley put the aim this way: “We saw this opportunity where survival horror, or whatever you want to call it, gave us an opportunity to develop characters inside of that world.”

  • Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
  • Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
  • Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
  • 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.

That approach linked the story to the player’s actions. The intended experience was intimate and grounded rather than spectacle for its own sake: combat and survival would put players inside morally difficult situations, while pressure gave the relationship room to change.

Books and films offered specific storytelling reference points

The creators named works they admired for particular effects. They did not describe these books or films as sources for The Last of Us’s plot.

Work Creator’s stated connection
City of Thieves by David Benioff Druckmann pointed to its journey involving two survivors and the evolving bond between them.
No Country for Old Men Druckmann cited its tension and what storytelling can achieve through subtraction.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy Straley named it as a reference.

The comparison is useful when separated by function: the Mute Girl idea and City of Thieves speak to relationship-building; The Road to a survival setting; and No Country for Old Men to tension and restraint. The interview continuation discusses these references alongside the creators’ comments on the game.

Planet Earth, not Primeval, supplied the cordyceps reference

The Infected’s premise came from natural history footage about cordyceps affecting insects. When asked about the TV series Primeval, Druckmann corrected the suggestion: “No, the BBC show we were ripping off is Planet Earth, where they talked about the cordiceps fungus and how it affects insects.” (The interview spells the fungus “cordiceps” in this quotation; the standard spelling is cordyceps.)

Straley also recalled videos described as showing “zombie ants,” calling them “our jumping-off point.” He and Druckmann were drawn to the contrast between the fungus’s delicate, colorful growth and the distress of a host controlled by a parasite. PlayStation’s official blog likewise describes nature documentaries as part of the Infected concept’s origin.

Concept art turned the fungal idea into a recognizable creature design

The natural phenomenon supplied a premise, but the visual design took further development. In a later Naughty Dog retrospective, Druckmann described concept artist Hyoung Nam combining photographs of fungal growth with an image of a person slumped against a wall. The resulting image covered the person in fungus until the face was obscured. Art director Erick Pangilinan said the Cordyceps bloom on the head helped connect the creature’s appearance to the concept.

Druckmann summarized Nam’s process: “Hyoung Nam, one of our concept artists, eventually did this mash up…he took these fungal growths, these photographs of them and this person that was slumped against a wall and bashed them together, so this person that was against the wall, just covered in fungus, you couldn’t even see their face anymore.” Naughty Dog’s retrospective also recalls that the team debated whether the game needed Infected at all.

How the inspirations fit together

No single book, film, or documentary accounts for the game’s origin. The creators’ accounts describe separate inputs serving different purposes: a playable relationship idea shaped the human core; survival horror created pressure for character development; books and films offered examples of bonds, atmosphere, and restraint; and cordyceps footage provided a natural basis for the Infected. Together, those strands informed a game in which the world’s danger and the relationship are closely connected.
