The pain came on suddenly, she said, and was severe enough that an ambulance took her to hospital. That 2021 incident is separate from the six-week hospitalization she described in 2024.
What happened to Kate Beckinsale in 2021?
Speaking to James Corden, Beckinsale recalled putting on a pair of leggings in her hotel room while filming an intense drama. She joked that despite having made many action movies, she injured herself during this ordinary moment. The Independent reported her account on 12 September 2021: The Independent’s report on Beckinsale’s interview.
“I was in my hotel room putting on a pair of leggings, and it felt like a sort of guitar string snapped and everything was horrible.”
She described intense pain and said she could not walk, lie down, or sit comfortably. She compared the pain to childbirth, saying it was “worse than having a baby.” These are Beckinsale’s descriptions of what she felt, not a clinical diagnosis.

How did she get to hospital?
Beckinsale said an ambulance transported her to hospital. She also recalled receiving substantial medication, but the report does not specify the treatment or provide medical records. Her account identifies the circumstances and symptoms; it does not establish a precise diagnosis for the 2021 injury.
Was the 2021 injury the same as her 2024 hospitalization?
No. They were separate episodes. In March 2024, Beckinsale shared hospital-bed photos while paying tribute to her mother and thanking people for their support, but did not initially say why she was hospitalized. In later comments in 2024, Beckinsale described a six-week hospital stay involving a Mallory-Weiss tear, vomiting blood, and a severe flare of mast cell disease. She connected the episode with stress, shock, and grief. The Los Angeles Times reported her explanation that grief had “burned a hole” in her oesophagus and made eating difficult; that phrase was her account, not an independent medical finding.
