By 2050, an influencer could be a synthetic persona posting around the clock and tailoring its messages to individual followers. That is a plausible scenario, not a known destination: the available evidence does not establish what influencers will look like decades from now. The concern is less that every creator will be replaced than that influence could become harder to see, question, and control.
There may be no clear line between human and AI influencer
Influence is already better understood as a spectrum than as a contest between people and machines. A May 2025 policy brief from the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) distinguishes among AI avatars, AI influencers, and AI agents. The categories differ in how much humans control the persona and how transparently its operation is disclosed.

These are useful distinctions, not a prediction that each category will become common. In a 2025 scenario developed from foresight discussions in Berlin, DGAP considers a future in which autonomous AI influencers become mainstream. The brief explicitly says this scenario is not a prediction; it is a way to think through possible consequences.
Why the future could feel less human
Personal attention could become automated persuasion
An autonomous persona could, in principle, publish continuously and respond to followers without a person composing each reply. If it were also personalized using audience data, interaction could feel intimate while being systematically optimized. That possibility does not prove that automation will persuade more effectively; it does raise a question about whether followers can tell when a relationship-like exchange is designed to influence them.

Trust could depend on disclosure and control
A 2024 experiment in Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans examined young adults viewing an Instagram lifestyle influencer profile. In that specific study, perceived similarity (homophily) and parasocial relationships mediated the effect of influencer type on purchase intent, while perceived authenticity moderated the pathway. The result helps explain why authenticity and connection matter in that setting. It does not establish a universal response across audiences, platforms, or future synthetic personas.
That limitation matters: a synthetic influencer may be clearly labeled and closely supervised, while a human creator may rely heavily on automated systems. The label alone cannot answer who chooses the message, approves it, or handles a follower’s response. Transparency about both the persona and its operation would be central to meaningful trust.

Privacy and agency could be harder to protect
DGAP’s autonomous-influencer scenario raises concerns about privacy, blurred identity, reduced audience participation, and human oversight. If an account’s responses were informed by personal data, followers might have little visibility into what information shaped a message or how it was used. These are conditional risks, not established outcomes. They point to practical questions about consent, data use, disclosure, and the ability to challenge or disengage from automated interactions.
Influence could concentrate in platforms
When software creates and distributes personas at scale, platform rules may matter as much as an individual creator’s choices. DGAP flags platform power, moderation, and disclosure among the issues that could arise in its scenario. Who sets the rules for ranking, labels, enforcement, and oversight would help determine whether audiences can distinguish persuasion from ordinary conversation—and whether human creators retain meaningful control.

What current research can—and cannot—tell us
A November 2025 research editorial by Audrezet and colleagues defines virtual influencers as digital personas made with AI and computer-generated imagery. It reviews work comparing human and virtual influencers, engagement, and social and ethical questions. The authors identify autonomous virtual influencers, expansion across media, inclusion, and social change as directions for future research. Those open questions underline how much remains unsettled; current studies cannot establish audience behavior in 2050.
No defensible numeric forecast for the number of influencers or the size of the influencer market in 2050 is established by these sources. A precise figure would imply certainty the evidence does not support. The more useful way to assess any future influencer is to ask:

- Control: Who creates, approves, and responds to the content?
- Transparency: Can the audience tell whether a person, an AI system, or both operate the persona?
- Relationship: What role do authenticity and perceived similarity play in the specific audience and setting?
- Privacy and agency: What data informs interactions, and what choices do followers have?
- Governance: Who sets disclosure, ranking, moderation, and oversight rules?
The unsettling version of 2050 is not simply a feed full of artificial faces. It is a system in which synthetic or AI-assisted personas can influence people while responsibility, data use, and human oversight remain difficult to see. Whether that happens depends on choices by creators, platforms, and regulators—not on a forecast that can be made with confidence today.
